Post subject:  Suggestions with 850 door cards

Hi,

I tried the forum search and google site:ausmini but not coming up with much information.

Has anyone successfully made their own 850 door cards? I don't need anything fancy, just vinyl covered will be better than what I have now - nothing.

I'm having trouble coming up with a pattern for the door card. I tried making a cardboard one A LOT SMALLER than what it should be and have difficulty fitting it in. I really don't know how a full size door card would fit?

What's the best material to use for the card? mdf? plastic pvc sheet? corflute? Not sure what would bend well enough to get in there...

And once its in, there are those "fillet" side pieces to hold it in place, has anyone made those? Anyone got a pattern?

Cheers!

OK got some PMs that 850s in Australia didn't have "door cards" just vinyl stuck on horsehair stuck onto the door. My doors do have some left over horsehair and I vaguely remember the old door vinyl we sold off them now...

This solves the issue of getting them to "fit" I guess.

Thanks!

You can buy stuff called "bituboard" which a kind of black semi-waterproof cardboard from an autotrim shop and then cover that with vinyl if you want the UK look..

Yea. I can tell you from experience with mine. I have the newton commercial door cards and they were an absolute P.I.T.A to fit. I had to peel the vinyl back from the bottom and cut about 1cm off the bottom of the wood and stick it back on. And I still havent figured out how to get those silly fillet things to fit properly.

Hear is an idea - bit of work though.

I kept the door inserts from the sliding window doors on my van, they are the same as an 850 door.
The inserts were the original vinyl backed with horsehair and were in very good condition but flexible so were easy to re-install (after I painted them with vinyl paint) by gluing them back in.
I have the Newton Commercial inserts for my 850 project and I compared them to what I had-they are the exact same shape and size as the originals but on a hard board backing.
I plan to rip the vinyl off the hard board backing, stick on some flexible material (like horsehair) and glue them on the doors as the originals were done.
I did try to fit the Newton Commercial door inserts to my van doors but they just don't fit as they are not flexible like the original inserts and the bottom needs to be bent upwards to fit (like the originals).
I don't know how they fit them on the Pommie doors but they are definitely the right size and shape for 850 doors, just too thick and not flexible enough.

This has been a complaint about the Newton Commercial door cards for several years. Apparently they have recently changed the backing material for something thinner and more flexible, which is said to be a big improvement.
