Post subject:  Front wheels binding when rotating by hand

Hi all,
Tried doing a search but had no definitive answer, I have a 97 mini which I recently replaced the front wheel bearings (timken tapered) when I changed balljoints and discs, after completing job it felt like the wheel would bind in one part of rotation, I originally thought it was a warped disc but I am now not sure if it is something with the bearings or possibly uni's. I recently had work done on car and they didn't notice any issues but I can hear at low speeds the pads rubbing, and when jacked up one wheel at a time the wheel on both sides will bind. Has anyone got any suggestions for what I should be looking at, when I turn wheel by hand it looks like the drive shaft is pushing outwards and putting pressure on pads causing binding.

Could be the bearing spacer is a little thin and causing the bearings to bind. Were they genuine Timken ones?

Genuine timkens came in sets with spacers, bought from Karcraft

It sounds like the bearings - if they are too tight, when you turn them they will feel 'notchy' - they will move, bind, move, bind.

It might just be a matter of tapping the outer races in further or cleaning the surfaces - if you have a bit of grime on the surface that the race sits on it will become too tight.

Try checking with the jack under the ball joint end of the lower arm, to get the ride height right... if the suspension is in the "relaxed" position the cv joint or the driveshaft rubbing on the subframe may be giving you that tight spot

Drive shaft not hitting frame, but will give it a go and see if there is a difference

HI, i had the same issue after rebuilding the front subframe, turned out to be a bent flange. As soon as the new one was put on the problem went away
good luck, cheers
