Post subject: | Sticky Bendix |
Ive found that since Im dealing with a 47yr old Lucas starter motor that hasnt been used in a couple of years the bendix is now sticking. It initially stuck engaged, then I freed it up and now it stuck un-engaged... Ive got a feeling 13 years ago when I fitted it, I may have either put some grease or oil on the shaft.... which has probably attracted clutch dust..... Ive currently got the bendix soaking in a jar of petrol. How are these things removed from the shaft? Looks tricky... Any other thoughts on trying to flush out and clean this one? |

I have the tool to remove the bendix if you really want to do that . . . I wouldn't. Get into it with brake cleaner or similar then add some graphite powder to it. |

If you have the tool, then its a piece of cake to remove the gear, clean out the threads (carb cleaner is good) and bung it back on...with a sploge of graphite. Any one know where I could get one of these tools?? Cheers, Ian |

It is relatively easy to make a tool yourself. Just need 2 bits of steel and drill a hole through both of them the right size so they will sit over the shaft but with enough meat to sit on the spring. Then drill 2 holes through both pieces for the clamping bolts. You could either make your bolts screw into the bottom piece or just use a nut and bolt setup. Then take the piece you have drilled and tapped or if just drilled either of your pieces and cut a slot out, turning your piece of metal into a C, so it can now slide under the spring once you slide the bendix down the shaft. Then just slide the bendix down, insert the C piece, sit the other on top and bolt them together until you can get the clip out and then lift the clamped spring off. |

Real early 850s had 2x locknuts on there instead of that %&@*# wire clip.. a much better idea. |

Thanks M_M_M your description would lead pretty much to a serviceable version of the factory tool .... I keep meaning to make one just as you describe ..but I'm just lazy. Cheers, Ian |

If Any one is after A Starter spring compressing tool I have them in stock. They cost $35.00 Each plus post. They do make the job easier and not dangerous like Vice and Vice grips. You would not want one of those springs to fly off and take your eye ball out I am sure they will do it with ease. You will not see it coming! |
