Noob question

What do people recommend for rust treatment?

Is there one product that is good for everything or different ones for
differnt areas?

Cheers

A bit of everything - where are you looking at?

I've had very good success with a wirewheel and POR-15 paint - expensive, but does the job beautifully. I've used POR on my floorpans and around my master cylinders, as I know that brake fluid strips most paint, but it doesn't seem to affect POR.

I've used the RustKill paints on some of my component like my radiator, radiator brackets, engine steadies etc. and I'm pretty happy with it. Again, I just ran over everything with a wire wheel, then sprayed over. Only place where it has failed is on the top radiator bracket when I didn't bolt it down hard enough, and a few weeks of hot coolant weeping out caused it to bubble.

I've used rust converters, but they don't do the same job as a rust dissolver and new paint, I've never got them to work as well as I would have liked.

There is also KBS Rust Seal - very similar to POR15 but Aussie Made and there are more colours to choose from. A bit cheaper than POR 15 as well.

KBS/POR is good stuff, it's self levelling so it leaves a good finish even if you brush it. I remember seeing someone on here who had sprayed a subframe with black POR15 using a cig little beaver sprayer - the finish was very glossy!

Just be aware that KBS/POR degrades when exposed to UV so you need to overcoat it - not really a problem if you are doing rust repairs which will be painted over anyway though.

Phosphoric acid is my recommendation I use Bondall brand available at bunnings around $25 per liter. It will burn your skin as good as it kills rust!Image

I have been using 2 products lately

Galmet Ironize http://www.itwpf.com.au/galmet/product. ... oductid=13
I apply it with a paint brush for small spots and heavy duty rust. Can be painted over. Just slap it on and when it dries you can paint over it.

Supacheap septone stuff. http://www.supercheapauto.com.au/online ... 0015#Cross
Have to be careful to only apply it to the rust and not clean metal or paint because it stays sticky. Is a bit more toxic as well so you need to use PPE.
