Post subject:  Gearbox ID Please.

Hi Guys,

I'm changing the gearbox on my mini as it currently has a 3 synchro with a high ratio diff which can be a pain in the butt to drive around in. I've 2 gearboxes, both of which I've checked the gearing of the diffs and both are 3.44. There is no real difference between the two that I can see, one has slightly more worn synchros, but I'd thought I'd check with you boffins and see which box would be better to use, I don't know if one has different ratios to the other or what. Engine is a rebuilt 1100 +20thou mild cam with a 40mm Dellorto mainly used around town but with regular stints on the Hwy at 100-110Kmph

Gearbox #1 - This one looks to have the better synchros...

Thanks guys, look forward to hearing your answers.

Cheers,
Keels.

1st one according to Mini King book is rodchange with small idler bearing,
2nd one is a more common Oz rodchange, small idler bearing, same ratios as a Mini K etc remote box.

Essentially both boxes are much the same if my books are right.

Thanks for that Doc. Managed to find a bit of info online that pretty much says the same thing. Looks like I'll go the one with less wear :)

Thanks again.

Cheers,
Keels.

To check Your ratio's count the teeth on the crown wheel and the pinion
also the teeth on 4th gear cluster and first motion shaft
or look for part number on cluster between 3rd and 4th gear

When I said `ratios' in my previous post, I meant internal gearset, not the diff ratio.
Most all rodchange boxes here had a 3.444:1 diff,
but a Mini K remote box was 3.765 (early) or 3.647 (most, and also 1098 Clubby).

The Reason I suggested Counting The teeth, Is because over the Years
people may have changed the ratios Gear or diff for one reason or another,
it does not hurt to Know exactly what You have
