Why does a little 1275 need disc brakes when 60s and early 70s holdens had 6 cyl engines with drums all round and alot heavier in weight |

Yep he's right. But IMO it comes down to the fact that the only minis (not mokes) came from the factory with a 1275 and disc brakes together so for "safety" the same level of acceleration and braking abilities should be applied to a modified/upgraded mini. I have driven a mini fast with a 998 and drums and it works out alright. I've also driven a 1275 with drums and it works out the same as the 998, it's possiable to do so safely. Then I installed the disc brakes under the 1275 and it's a whole heap eaiser to drive with confidence. The weird thing is Leyland released some mokes with 1275's and drum brakes at the same time they were releasing mini's with 1275's and disc brakes. Why dose one need it and not the other and their both street legal...crazy Leyland and the transport authorties of the time  .

It is not a matter of a 1275 really needing discs for safety, it is the fact that all 1275 minis came with discs from the factory. So the factory has done the engineering work for you. So if you want to go from an 850 to a 1275 you can do the upgrade without needing any engineering approval as long as you use all the safety features that the 1275 Mini came with (meaning discs). Drum brakes on Holdens. If you want to stick a 350 Chev motor in your drum braked HQ Belmont guess what? You have to use discs like the 350 powered cars came with. If you really want to stick with drums and a 1275 you will need to get it engineered because nobody else did. The factory did the engineering paperwork for the Moke with drums and a 1275. If you want to stick a 1275 in a Moke you can do it without discs. |

I would say the weight of a 1275 moke is a contributing factor as to why they believed discs were not needed. |

"Most trucks have drums all round and some of them might be a little heavier than a Mini." Drums are more effective because of more friction area but suffer fade when used over and over. Discs are better when used in race situations as they cool better. |

2LS drums stop you real good... once. Discs keep on stopping good, and don't need adjustment.

Hey on the subject on brakes, what's the going price for a pair of 7.5inch brakes/Full disc drive assembly. Discs, calipers, hubs,bearings, steering arms, drive flanges etc, new ebc pads, disc in good nick, got a pair l might let go, ta |

I might be interested |
