Post subject:  Two speed wiper switch

Hey guys

I recently bought a 2 speed wiper switch (BHA4786LUCAS) to put in my deluxe. It has a 2 speed wiper motor already installed and the wiring is all there for the two speed. I noticed as I was putting it in that the switch only fits in upside down to the below diagram. In making reference to the two holes above the toggle it shows that the two holes should be above, whereas my switch will only fit in when those two holes are actually in the bottom due to the straight edge in the ignition panel.

Can anyone confirm if the diagram is the right way around or whether I just need to drill out my ignition panel. My one speed wiper switch and headlight switch both have the holes on the bottom of their toggle switches.

Cheers

Is your wiper switch on the left or right of the ignition switch. In later mk1 cars the wipers are on the right.

There was a point in around mid 68 when the round body wiper motor came in that the position of the headlight and wiper switches swapped around and the new switch gear to suit and the switch panel changed.

You may need to modify you switch panel. Other alternative is fit wiper switch on right and headlights switch on left. That may mean a different headlight switch unless it can be wired up to work the other way up.

I think I modded my switch panel to fit this switch... which in my 1970 car is on the left now. After owning an 850 previously I found a RH wiper switch confusing..

This old post may be worth reading thru.

Note in the photo in that thread that the wiper switch when installed on the right has the 2 hols at the bottom, however this is a single speed switch.

Perhaps the switch can be inverted but wired up the differently to suit

....but prob easier to just file the flat out of the hole.

Oh that is very interesting. I think that may be the case - that it's supposed to be on the right but with my MK1 panel the wipers are usually on the left.

I think I may just file out the flat hole and turn it the other way up.

Thanks guys

Yes that's right, just noticed your car is 67 so the wipers go on the left, but that new switch is designed for the right side.

You certainly won't be the first person to file those holes round. :D

Yeah, I guess it's either that or try and get a mk2 headlight switch and put the wipers on the right and lights on left yes?

If you look at the numbers on the front of the casing I would think the switch was photographed upside down.

I photographed the switch that way as it must be mounted so, if you want `up' position to be `off'.

I didn't notice those numbers were upside down. So why was this done? Was there other cars this switch was used on where the toggle position is down?

It is an MGB 2 speed wiper switch.
It's mounted this way in an MGB too.
No idea why Lucas stamped it this way, it does NOT mean it's mounted upside down.. life is not neat like that.
