Hi all,

So I'm coming to the final stages of putting my mini back together and have run into a problem with the windscreens.

Firstly the rubber appears to be too long - We'd get most of the screen in with our little fitting tool, but then the remaining rubber would come out and bunch up, making it impossible to get back in.

I thought that maybe the rubber needed cutting down - but it was the rubber that was in the car when I took them out? Weird?

I've watched a couple of videos on how to's, but they're generally one piece rubbers or late model UK cars which are slightly different.

Does anyone have any tips or tricks to fitting these screens back in? Front and rear

Cheers
James

Been through this lately and l have the following advice, mostly given from other members.

Highly recommend using new rubbers.
The rear rubber will need to be reduced in size slightly, make this cut at the top and centre.
The front rubber doesn't need to be cut.
It makes it easier if the rubber is left in the sun to soften up.
Make a paste using a bar of soap to lubricate the channel for the glass to slide into. Water can be added to the paste if required during install. Do not use dish washing liquid, it's not very good to the paint, l have been told.
Make sure you have the rubber around the right way.
I used a soft mallet and took my time installing the rubber onto the body, l started up the top centre and slowly worked my way around tapping as l went, pay very close attention to the corners, this is probably where you are having dramas with the install. Make sure you have a really tight fit with the rubber, if you don't you will excess rubber at the end.
Slide the glass into the bottom channel and into one corner, work your way around getting the bottom and 2 sides in, you should be able to get it all in except the top and top corners. I went to bunnings and bought a kinchrome plastic trim remover kit, it's cheap and comes with 4 different plastic spatulas, this really helped.
When you get to the top get someone inside the car with one of the plastic implements to push the rubber out starting at a corner as you apply pressure on the glass on the outside. Make sure the person on the inside is applying pressure to the edge where it sits over the glass. It is easier with a new rubber and they are pretty cheap, l also soaked the rubber in a bucket of hot water first. Hope this helps

Wow thanks for you reply!

It's mainly the rear rubber I'm having an issue with - When you say it needs to be cut at the top and centre, what do you mean exactly?

Thanks
James

Most rear rubbers are UK size, made to suit their Mk2 on, and they have a wider rear window than ours (which are all UK Mk1 sized).
Front ones are all the same and don't need cutting.

You can also buy this screen rubber by the metre from rubber shops- eg Grippy rubber in Sydney, or Clark Rubber.

When buying a new rear window rubber from karcraft/ minisport you will notice a seam/ joint located in the middle along the horizontal plain. Make a cut here on this seam, have the cut located at the top then cut the excess away once you are confident the rubber is install correctly. When you install your locking strip have your cut at the bottom and centre not at the top where the rubber was cut, if that doesn't make sense l will put up a pic
