So what would be the best way to improve the crash safety of a mini?? I pressume you would leave the front alone so It crumples like designed, but try to strengthen the front of the cabin to keep the engine out on impact. |

wow watch the dummys head in them test by the looks of it if you have a bad crash you also get a broken neck. ouch. |

Hello Goodie, Good thinking Mate I must admit looking at the crash test I wondered why the did not fit headrests sooner I am fairly sure Australia had them fitted a long time before the UK, considering the year they were made they stood up better than I would have thought. |

I bought a set of 1960s NOS aftermarket headrests off ebay for this reason. They slip over the top of the seat and are adjustable for rake and height. Easily removable, and makes it comfy to drive as I can have my head supported when cruising the highways! Only problem is that they are tan colour and my interior is black......so I just take them off when the car is on display.....simples! |

I just survived a Mini into a tree @ 60mph approx, [back in 1965] the tree went thru the radiator, suspension etc and ended up about 1ft into the roof.Engine stayed out of the cabin. I was sitting in the passenger's seat. Luckily we were airborne when we hit, the not so big gumtree deflected back and took a lot of the energy. There are worse cars than a Mini to have a prang in... It's not just the front either. My first one (1976 Leyland) got written off from behind while I was in it & stationary at the lights. He hit the rear LHS. Shifted the rear seat forwards 6 inches & crushed the tank. How I didn't go up in flames I have no idea, but I got out of it with only a slightly sore neck. Yay for mini seats with head-rests! At some point I intend to replace those two long metal covers under the car with stronger ones that attach to the front & rear sub-frames. The extra weight is a pain, but it's low & I can spare the Hp, & I it should stiffen the floor of the cabin. My under-engine plate is already doing a little of that for the front end. |
