I have a habit of messing things up! After cleaning the carburetors i turned over the engine and one carb spit loudly and the engine died. Happened over and over. Any ideas? Also what are good places in brisbane for mini maintenance? Someone in a thread I made a while ago suggested contacting Matt the miniman? I sent a message but haven't heard back. Thanks in advance. |

Did you change the mixtures? What work did you do? Just a clean? Spitting isn't abnormal, particularly if the car is cold and the mixture is a little lean... |

I haven't tinkered with the mixtures for a while but the purpose of the clean was to fix them up properly with an airflow tool. I got a bit nervous when it spit and after the second attempt starting it again i could smell a metallic scolding smell after it spit and quit. The car wasn't too cold as I had it running beforehand after fitting a new battery. |

I like to baseline the carbs to two turns down of the mixture screw, and two turns down (from initial contact) of the idle screws. That way it will be a little rich, run a little fast, but otherwise be a fine starting point for the tuneup. Its nice to reference the starting points of the mixture screws in flats from closed, just for the confidence later on. I'm assuming your timing is untouched and still correctly set, is this the case? The spitting is not what you want, but will not do any damage while you tune it up. |

didn't happen to take the spark plug leads off and mix them up did you? |

I think I only fiddled with the idle screws last time I tried. Could have accidentally put the two leads on the left side of the cyl head back on wrong! Will check in the morning. Don't suppose you blokes know of any good mini mechanics in brissie as well for an engine tune/general maintenance check? |

And have the Internet generation ever thought of picking up the phone and calling instead of relying on "I sent him a message and he's not responded" Matt would gave to be one of the best bets for mini repair in brissie. Maybe he was surfing and missed your email..... |

Swapped those spark plugs around and now it's all good! Back to adjusting the mixtures again. Thanks for the heads up, Simon. Was more of a general inquiry message I sent over the website.. obviously a phone call will be the next step |
