Sorry to say I don't really have a full answer for that one. The XE somehow refers to a 4 syncro gearbox. All the Cooper S codes are silly. Sticking a 9 in front of them to try and fool the FIA that the 1275 is really a continuation of the 997. |

p71 of John Parnell's book "Original Mini Cooper and Cooper S" just states `Introduction of 4 speed all-synchromesh gearbox'. |

The XE means its a 4 synchro close ratio box ie Cooper S ratios. When you compare it to the 3 synchro Ta/Sa boxes where the T means standard ratio and the S means close ratio/Cooper S and the a means 3 synchro, then the X probably refers to close ratio and the E means 4 synchro box. RonR |

the gearbox case should have XE stamped on the front too |
