Has anyone taken an early mini over the pits at Regency Park?
Do they have someone there that knows minis?
I am a bit worried about getting an inspector that doesn't know about body/vin numbers. I have heard a few stories about people in NSW having to get there body restamped with police numbers because the inspector is misinformed.
In Adelaide all cars requiring a rego check have to go to the one rego station at Regency Park so I can't pick and choose like in the other states.
My other option is to rego the car in QLD before it comes down. It will then be an over the counter rego swap if the car is currently rego'd in my name.

I took my van through. I fitted a Rover spi engine which had a different engine number. Body was an english shell with no real ID on it. They did not pick on that, just a few other minor things. Took two goes to get through, had a different inspector both times. One of the inspectors was an older chap who did know a bit about Minis....

Thanks mate.
The other issue I want to avoid is flares. I don't want to fit flares to my car.
I know that South Australia made it a requirement that the Cooper S had to have flares fitted. I wonder if they still have this requirement in place or is it more about the tyres protruding. I am running 145/10 tyres and they don't appear to protrude. I might have to give them a call.

Personally I would register it in qld and do the over the counter change over. Regency shouldent be an issue however I have heard stories of a well know mini guy in Adelaide almost being arrested over body numbers, matching numbers s, regency just couldent get the fact that body numbers changed etc! Sorted in the end with ths right literature!

I took my "68 deluxe to Lonsdale and not Regency Park-passed no worries even though it had lots of modifications.
The guy that inspected it was older and knew Minis.

Is that correct, or do they still want to check it over even if it's currently registered interstate? My mate has one currently registered in Vic, much modified, bigger non original engine, fibreglass bonnet, and so on - all the usual suspects so far as modified Minis are concerned - and he's very apprehensive about swapping the rego over in case they insist on inspecting it.

I registered my corolla and a box trailer over the counter. They were registered in QLD. You have to pay for new number plates, registration and an admin fee. All this was done at the Service SA centre in Gawler.

You only need a teir 2 inspection https://www.sa.gov.au/topics/transport-travel-and-motoring/motoring/vehicles-and-registration/vehicle-inspections/interstate-vehicle-transfer-identity-inspection-tier-2 which as long as you haven't gone overboard with modifications you will be fine. When I took mine in it had no records of ever being registered in any state of Aus as it had been off the road for about 20 years so it had fallen off all databases. Took three guys about 20 minutes and a couple of coffee's to walk around it chatting about how many mini's they had when they were younger etc and a long chat about what I wanted to do to it etc, ignore some wally with his chevydore demanding service, finally they gave the usual you could do with one of these and one of those but since it is pre ADR it doesn't matter here is your slip for rego have a nice day sir :D

By the way these guys are NOT at Regency Park so don't take your car there! If you make that mistake they will insist on the full inspection (I was warned about that) so take note of the address on the link and check where they are before you go. I recommend going first thing I the morning as you don't book in for a teir 2 just rock up and wait your turn so get in first before the wankers in their chevydores etc get out of bed

Thanks womble99.
I will ask my local police if they will do the tier 2.
Lonsdale is the other side of town about 65km away.
I should come close to the 40km radius from the CBD as stated in the link.

As long as your car is in the system you will be good to go with the local coppers. From memory I live further out than you and had no drama with my local guy only problem was my car had no records anywhere in the country that he could find so into town I had to go. To be honest the guys in town were pretty good but I think my local cop would have been harder as we do tend to have a beer or two at the local so he tends to make sure things are by the book

The inspection station is in the suburb of Regency Park just not AT the Regency Park Office, most people go to the wrong one and hence get caught out. The one for teir 2 inspections is on Naweena Rd and is very poorly signed, it is in a warehouse at the back off the street. If you look on google (7 Narweena Rd) you will see it as the Stillwell workshops on the left and a non descript grey sign on the right which says vehicle inspection centre.

nice :) tier 2 is really just check numbers and then a basic visual ie obvious oil leaks, seat belts etc etc really should only take about 10 mins

I didn't realise there was another inspection station at Regency. Never had the need to go there. All my previous cars have been over the counter at Gawler.

Almost no-one knows there is another inspection station there, that is why so many people complain about having their cars go over the pits! Because if you go the main inspection station at Regency they will force you to have the full inspection done once you are there and that is when the problems start........ However if you are lucky enough to find this nondescript warehouse a few blocks away it is pretty well much plain sailing :)

I've heard all the usual horror stories about Regency Park. My mother in law had to get her Victorian registered motorhome inspected and they were horrific to her, they reduced her to tears. She ended up calling her brother to help her our who had experience with them due to owning his own bus charter company. They complained about the first person and got a second who was pretty good. Her brother sold his bus business due to having to continually deal with Regency Park for his annual inspections. However a few years earlier my mother in law lived in the country and had an interstate car inspected by the local police officer who literally just looked at the car and said yes that's fine. But I've heard that Lonsdale is pretty good.
