Post subject:  missing Mini Id/body Plate - help

Hi Everyone,

i recently purchased a 'restored' mini body, its had some good repairs done and some bad ones. I plan to re-do the bad ones.

my issue is the ID plate thing and the body number stamped do not match.
now i called the guy I purchased them off and he had had a friend (these guys were in there 70's) do the body work who was ocne a panel beater, and made the one good car from two and a few new pannels. it was then primed and then the engine bay/underside and inside rubber painted. and the other body adn leftovers were dumped.

now somewhere in this process the wrong Id plate was re-riveted onto the restored body and the other plate gone with the scrap metal.

What can I do to get my car registerd? can I source a blank plate and have it re-stamped? or do i need to go through the painfull and expensive surogate vin process?

I have had the numbers checked using the government online thing to check if the cars were stolen which they were not.

thanks in advance for any help.

oh, its about a 76ish round nose with hydro sub frames if that helps.

Leroy

Roundnoses finished in 1971 and hydro a couple of years later. I doubt it's a 76 unless a real bitsa.

I would bin that wrong compliance plate, it is not a VIN plate and is not essential to have for re-registration.

Yes. As it's an Oz Mini and has been registered before.
Tell us the number prefix on the rad shroud or give a pic of the firewall and we can probably tell you what it is or was.

ill grab a photo tonight when i get home from work.

I could not find any number on the radiator shroud, found the one behind the brake/clutch masters though, which is " 11537 "

it has been primed then like body deadner/ruberised-paint painted in the engine bay so i had to scrape back the paint in all the possible locations.

should it also have a number on the Rad shroud?

Thanks
Leroy

Early cars 850 etc had no numbers on the rad shroud.
A pic showing the whole width of the firewall, and the wiper arm positions on the scuttle will help ID it.

Leave it off.
If it's a roundnose car- (not Clubby shape)
Compliance plates were used from ~December 1969 to September? 1971.
It is rivetted to the front of the RH suspension tower.
Cars built ~March 1969 to Dec 1969 had no plates at all.

If it is 1961 to ~March 1969 it had no compliance plate, but a body plate on the firewall instead.

it has no doors, I know what clubman doors look like also btw, I have doors in the shed for it off my 63 mini.
the body takes external hinges, I have added a photo of where the door would close if this is what you meant?

sorry about bad photos, i have no light in the shed only a phone and bad flash 0_0

the ID plate you can see on the firewall is the wrong one I mentioned earlier btw, riveted in the wrong place by the previous owner and the numbers do not match.

The firewall looks like a Mini Deluxe, 1965 to 1969.
It is not an 850 or K firewall unless it has been modified.

If the number is right it would make it a Deluxe from 1966.

That body number looks like it has been welded, ground back and restamped.
Can you see the back side of the stamping from inside the car?
Edit, Did you take to it with a grinding disc?

It's body dead end on the back also. I'll scrape it back and take a look.
The photo looks bad but that's due to me scraping the paint layers back to find the number.

No worries. Are you going to keep the Body plate. How far off are the numbers on the plate.
