Folks, Guy from work has acquired a '65 Austin Cooper. It was imported by the vendor into Victoria. He's gone to register the car in Qld and has been told it needs to meet ADR! So, Qld transport told him he needed to do a crash test, fit airbags and rear seat belts. He engaged an engineer who has said the rear seat belts are sufficient. Question is, why on earth is he having to do anything all? I recently sold a '69 mini that didn't have rear seat belts. What's going on? JC |

That rule applies to an ICV not an import. My guess is his import papers are not in order, OR it was imported incorrectly as a race/rally car with limited use, or imported as parts. That vintage car needs not meet ADR as they didn't exist at the time. If he wants to unload the car give him my number, I may be interested in buying it. G. |

If it's a stock standard car, this sounds like a complete load of BS to me. Surely the car would only have to comply with the ADR's that were applicable when it was manufactured (ie none in 1965). |

I'm with the Captain... I haven't registered a car in Qld for some time ...but I'm sure if he fronts up and asks to register his 65 Mini there won't be many questions asked.... I find having non Aus cars somewhat of an advantage. If they query anything, I just tell them thats how they came. Invariably this is accepted because who knows any different? Cheeers, Ian |

My experience when Importing from NZ was it only had to comply with ADR for it's age.... http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/imports/import_options/pre1989scheme.aspx Quote: The option permits the importation of vehicles which do not comply with current Australian vehicle standards, and are therefore outside normal certification arrangements. However state and territory registration requirements will generally require that the vehicles comply with the standards that applied at the date the vehicle was originally manufactured.

Hey JC, a mate of mine has imported a few, ok a lot, of old cars from Japan into Qld. He has also been told to put seat belts into the rear of cars that never had them. No other requirements. If you want to be connected with his engineer, PM me. M |

HA HA HA, stupid QT strikes again. They'd have to be the worst transport dept in Australia. Nothing but mountains of BS, even people that work can't even work out the stupid system. Even the most simple of rego requirements end up in dramas. |

I still have your steering rack! Found it when I was preparing for the move into the Taj Ma'shed. JC |
