When you do an oil change on your mini there is always some of the old oil still sitting in the oil cooler.

Who bothers removing the oil from the oil cooler as well - what's the consensus?

Not me. It holds less than the filter does.
[edit] I ran one for many years, but not anymore. I'll only refit it if I ever do another track day.

Same, never worried about it. I flush the oil every three months and replace the filter so the oil never gets too dirty anyway!

I have never done it, I use Docs magnet trick on the filter but you have got me thinking, at what point should you change the oil cooler? I am about to do an engine rebuild and maybe a new oil cooler should go in??

Cant Say I have ever drained the Oil cooler on my 1360, however its only done 10,000kms in 7 years 0_0 and its had about 12 oil changes in that time. . . .

I did it to my cars just after I purchased them.
Without any service history I just wanted to ensure my system was clean.
If you have an engine or gearbox failure then I would recommend doing it then as well.

If you have an engine failure and swarf got in the cooler, I would fling it and buy another.
I have flushed them out in the past with turps, but you're never sure you got all the rubbish out.....

I'm pretty sure when you took your new 1275 Cooper S in for service, BMC never drained or flushed the cooler...

The 2 times I flushed my cars I got SFA out of them.

For the small cost of an oil cooler, you wouldnt not replace it on a rebuild. Peace of mind I reckon.

I'd be tempted to take it to a gearbox shop or a radiator shop. I'd assume one of them could wash/disolve the old oil and crap right out.

The problem is not the oil, it's fine grit that can get trapped in the tiny passages through the cooler if you lunch the engine..
A new cooler is cheap, $90 or less sold here for a UK made one. No contest, IMO.

New one are around $100 (13 row) it's hardly worth the running around trying to get it cleaned. When rebuilding anything my moto is 'if in doubt replace it'

I imagine if you had an original early Cooper S 9 row oil cooler you would probably pay to have it flushed professionally, as they are not easily found.....
