Hi all.

I am new to this forum wondering if you would be able to help me out with selecting a gearbox for my 1978 leyland mini. I currently have a remote change gearbox without the gear change assembly and other small bits. Just wanting to know if I should stick with this and try and hunt down parts for it or buy a new rod change gearbox?

Any help on the matter is appreciated, thank you

Your floor pan is suited to a rod change, and so rod change is the natural choice for your gearbox.

Not a lot between them if you consider the gearbox itself and not the linkage, so the rebuild cost is much the same as the parts are more or less the same as well.

Remote change by its very design was more stable for the engine in that it reduced engine rocking through its long lever arm, but there are plenty of inexpensive aftermarket kits to prevent rock. Rod change is a little more prone to oil leaks through the immersed rear rod change exit, but there are also solutions for this problem as well.

So find yourself a replacement rod change unit, they're easy to get as they went right through to the end of production in 2001.

As mick said, rod change would suit your car with the floor pan.

I've got a rod change one that I'd be happy to swap for a remote if you're not too far away? I'm near Wollongong..
