What I'm curious about is the different gear ratios available in Australia. I've heard Mk II S ratios are good but really what are the differences in all the different gearboxes available through Australian production? So what are the different gearbox ratios that we can get our hands on? For example is the 850 box have different ratios to the Deluxe 998 or 1098? what do the Mk I and Mk II S's have?, Morris 1100S ratios etc etc. What are the different gear set varieties through early Morris 850 to Morris 1100/1100S and across to the late Leyland Mokes and everything in-between ![]() Come on brains trust share some light on this please. |

I'm definately not one of the brains trust or know if this is australian ratios but this is what some of my books say. 850 1st- 3.627:1 2nd- 2.172:1 3rd- 1.412:1 4th- 1:1 Diff- 3.765:1 Cooper S 1st- 3.200:1 2nd- 1.916:1 3rd- 1.357:1 4th- 1:1 Cooper S option 1st- 2.57:1 2nd- 1.78:1 3rd- 1.242:1 4th- 1:1 That is what my BMC workshop manual says anyway. |

This is a page of the 6/70 version of the workshop manual, it includes an Australian Produced Vehicles Supplement and this is a scanned page from therein. The penciled in numbers were by me in about 95 when I picked up a 3 synchro super close ratio helical cut gearbox (Lay gear 22g210) from a mini I purchased a couple of years before and pulled down. The space was blank otherwise. ![]() |

How I interpret that is they have included the diff ratio in the gear ratios so I just subtract the FD and that will give the correct gear ratios right ![]() Also how do I identify them to the gearbox and year? |
