Hi guys, I have been restoring my mini for about 8 years or so now.. Don't ask!! I frequently lurk on the forum which has saved me from numerous mistakes and wasted $$$...

Anyway, was hoping the collective brains trust could let me know if my numbers seem genuine. It has been suggested to me that my car is a 65 Cooper S.. But would be interested to see what you guys think..

So the build plate says YKG2S21914.. That's currently missing.. (Again.. Don't ask!) firewall # is 2989 ( just behind the brake and clutch reservoirs) and the radiator shroud # is 2492... The engine number matches the build plate but it's an 1100S block so I know it's not original to the car.. Hence my interest in the rest of the numbers.. Can anyone shed some light on it for me..

Much Appreciated

Steve..

Your car is YKG2S2 2989. Something doesn't sound right with the body plate. Do you have M2 06 on the radiator shroud?

Can't see anything else on the radiator shroud... Numbers are hard enough to make out due to typically shallow stamping and it's already painted...

If the plate says YKG2S2 1914 then the firewall should say 1914.

Ok, if the firewall says 2989 and the radiator shroud # is 2492 I would say they are a match. But are they Deluxe or Cooper S? We need the M2 06 or M2 05 off the shroud panel.

If an 1100S motor matches a Cooper S ID plate I would be very worried indeed!

If it is YKG2S2 2989 it would have been delivered around 7/1967. Your wiper motor, generator etc should be stamped a couple of months earlier if they are still original.
A deluxe with that low number would have been build early 1965.

Thanks guys, it's more of a case that the block numbers match the plate rather the plate matching the block.. Ie.. The block has been clearly re stamped but the punch doesn't look authentic... The wiper motor has 65 on it...

Everything else seems to say Cooper s.. Ie spot welding in the boot seems authentic, correct number of holes in the roof gutter, cut outs on the front beaver panel.. Not sure what else to look for..???

I did have Glen Carpenter run his eye over it a few years back.. Actually.. About 8 years back.. Just after I bought it and he was actually the first one to make me think it may be a genuine Cooper.. He said that I got a bargain as it was a genuine MKI.. But given all the discrepancies I'm not sure...

Really can't see anything else on the shroud.. Any other thoughts? Is there any way to tell the difference between a Cooper and a mini k from the build?

Cheers

Here is a few things of the top of my head. It is hard to give exact details without looking at the car to ascertain what configuration it should have. These things did change over the years. Even the experts can disagree on the dates for change overs.
Car number 2989 should have about 9FSAY 45500 and a 3 sincro box 22G333. AEG163 Head, Twin 1 1/4 su's tagged AUD146L and R, AEG347 Manifold, There should be a plastic fuel pump breather valve under rear left passenger, spot welded brackets for heater and r/h tank, thicker brake pedal arm, Boot board brackets pop riveted, Taller brake master cylinder, Lockheed booster, 7 1/2 inch disks, Covered dash rails, Solid ashtray in dash, Early had vertical front brace and small oil cooler mounted in front of engine, Angled front brace gave room for 13 row oil cooler mounted to front apron, 120 MPH speedo with slashes up to 130 MPH, Speedo mounted by 4 screws to a steel backing plate mounted to the original speedo housing, Lucas 23D4 distributor and HA12, Lucas horn mounted on the bonnet striker panel with an ‘L’ shaped bracket, regulator moved to behind cross beam to accommodate the booster. A lot of people ask for ways to ID an S and most of the time get a response like - Take it to an expert.
I have only had 2 Cooper S's and I am by no means an expert. I have however spotted a few fakes in my time. Hope this helps.

As already mentioned the M2/06 on the shroud would be the ideal find. Depends if you are prepared to strip away the paint.

Typically this stamp is poorly done, mine has been stamped at such an angle only the 2 and 6 is visible. It's position and angle in relation to the body number varies too, probably at the whim of the stamper, but its usually not too far from the number.

The fuel pump vent or it's hole in the correct position under the rear seat is another good indicator.

Thanks for all the info guys.. Will have another good look at the shroud.. So the M2 05 or 05 means what exactly? Otherwise most of the build info you have given me seems to line up with what I'm seeing on the car.. I suppose if it quacks like a duck then it's probably a duck! Cheers

Steve..

Australia used YD codes to denote the models. M2 is Morris 2 door. 05 is for Deluxe, 06 is for Cooper S, 23 is for Clubman GT.
Have a look at this webpage.
