Hey All,

I have a hollow plastic object that I want to make it into my gear knob.

the thread on the gear stick is 5/16 UNC correct?

Should I fill the object with something solid and drill/tap it
or should I fill it with something soft, like silicone, and just stick it onto the stick?

I'm worried silicone would be too soft but im not sure what else to use...
maybe fill it with Selley's knead-it or something?

The one Ive bought recently has a rubber sleeve pressed into it, so it threads, and stops, wherever you want. I reckon you could drill a larger hole and send a small rolled up piece of bicycle tyre into it.

A bit of rubber fuel hose.

What I have found in the past (and it may or may not work for your application), is that on the original gear knobs where the rubber insert has been destroyed over years, is to dig out the remaining rubber which leaves a larger hole approximately 1/2".
then preheat the knob with a hair drier or heat gun first, then fill with hot melt glue and allow to cool completely. you can then drill a 3/16" hole in the cooled glue. Screw it on your gear shift and presto it is as close to the original as can be.

As I said this may or may not suit your needs but hope fully it helps.

This rubber sleeve idea sounds pretty good.

like I said, the item (dont want to give it away just yet) is essentially a hollow plastic cube (with a lid that can come off) so i think I will need to fill it with something before I can put the sleeve in and attach it to the gear stick.

What do you suggest I fill it with?

Get casting resin with low exothermic reaction (stays cool).
Get a bolt with the same thread as the gear stick, grease the thread and secure it to the plastic object with a nut inside and out (the inside one must be clean and dry, fill it with the resin and let it go off.
Remove the bolt and wind it onto the gearstick, put the outside nut on the gearstick first to behave as a locknut.

You can also use Araldite epoxy. Use the super strength 24hr cure, not the 5 minute one. Drill and tap when cured.

I used silicon to glue a knob on once but it didn't work because the damn stuff thought it was still in the tube and it wouldn't go off!

That's odd, my silicons usually gone hard IN the tube, before I get to use it.

I got some 5/16 UNC nuts today to try Tombo's idea... doesn't appear they are the correct size.
I can only thread the nuts on until they are flush with the top of the stick before they jam.

I guess i'll see if I can get some 5/16 BSW nuts and see if they fit better

as far as silicon goes, i agree with peterb,... when ever you want to use it, its hard in the tube...

I will get UNF as well just in case, tho it doesn't look fine enough to be UNF... and the UNC nut _almost_ fits, its not crossing/damaging the threads, it just jams up after a few turns.

I'll find out for sure soon enough I guess

to save Silicon from going off, I wrap my tube in cling wrap and it seems to work for me especially around the end where it comes out and put a screw in the hole before you wrap it up but leave enough of the screw poking out to pull it in your vice or with a pair of pliers.
