Hi everyone. I will say thanks in advance to everyone who reads this and might be able to help me.

I recently bought a mini van - bare rolling shell that was someone's failed project. There was no plates or visible identifying numbers on the car and the front had been removed. Before i purchased it i checked with me transport sa as i plan to heavily modify and then road register the car if this situation is a problem. They replied, as i bought it legitimately from a business who bought it legitimately from someone and i have history of the car they would issue me with new id. I was rapt so i bought the car.

I then went to my engineer to get the ball rolling but then transport sa knocked my car back because of no numbers. They think its stolen i have looked all over the internet looking for ways to id a mini. I found lots of location to look for stamped numbers - slam panel, passenger floor panel , fan shroud cut off of my car, on the rh stiffener wing, under masters, behind masters no luck in any location.

But then i was talking to someone who has a early genuine cooper S race car and he showed me a location of a number right next to the centre speedo hole in the bulkhead. i have looked at over 50 minis and no other had this stamping. It is about 10mm in height. All other minis have had numbers behind the masters and are only 5mm in height. So i went home, sanded that location near the speedo and my car has the 4 large numbers. I cant find any info on these. Can anyone help :?:

4 numbers would be right. Most van models never went into 5 digits till the mid 70s.

It is very hard to work out the year without any extra info.
They made about 4000 Mini 850 vans with sliding windows between 64 and 65.
The numbers started again with about another 6000 vans with wind up window doors with 850s and then 998s between 65 and 69.
Then about 5000 Mini K 1100 vans from 69 to 71.

So what does this van look like? What doors does it have?

it has side glass a floor start button it has the extension of the floor pan as a Aussie van did a hole in the bulkhead for the heater it has the earlier style strikers(alloy and plastic) on the b pillar it has a hole in the a pillar for door switches (not fitted) has been fitted with wet suspension it had no front doors fitted but have mint sliding glass doors for it the floor pan has a nice neat hole for the wand type shifter (covered up) and a nasty hole cut for remote shifter on one of the barn doors there is a shadow of an 1100 badge the numbers are 7887 is that the body number ? that will be 501 off chassis number ? if so i just need to work out some more details to get a complete chassis number thanks again as i really need help i don't want to scrap this as body is in good shape

Do you have any pictures you can post that might help? Also helps if you add your location to your profile so people know where you are, there are a few members in the Adelaide area.

If you have it, the windscreen wiper motor has a date stamped on it. (month & year). Not foolproof as they can be changed but its pretty rare that they would be.

Is this 7887 near the master cylinders? If it is then yes that is your body number you just need to match it with the prefix. There was only a couple for vans afaik, but then again vans are not my strong suit.

On my wish list though ;-)

I got the photo to work from the link. Yes it is number 7887. This is higher than I was expecting.

Do you have another photo of the whole firewall? See that pressed dip below the car number, is there a similar dip on the passenger side?

It might be an idea to have a look in the channel at the back edge of the bonnet opening on the passenger side. Sometimes there is a rubber in the channel, a 69/70 van should have a hidden number stamped in the channel.

it appears to have pressings in the roof, so that would make it a windup window model wouldn't it?

my '66 van (MV04 474) didn't have roof pressings, but had windup windows with original colour paint inside them

i do have parts the windscreen wiper motor not the complete unit it has been painted many times over the years so i will soak the body in thinners over the weekend. The numbers are more towards the center spedo hole in bulkhead but i was hoping this is the body number i just need to work out the prefix . I have looked in that channel but on the right side will look on lh side on the weekend. Yes my van has ribs in the roof when i bought it it had no front doors but i picked up a set of sliding glass doors. thank you everyone for your help and comments sorry about my grammar

I just went into the shed i sanded that channel no numbers are present and the bulkhead only has one of those pressed dips on the rh side the lh side does not
