I have a rebuilt 1100 motor, its in a car running and driving, sitting on a good working rod change box, with all accessories and a full extractor/sports exhaust system, what's the market value of it?

I'll give you a carton for it Doogster ;)

seriously, you'd have to expect it to be worth at least $2K - the motor is worth what it cost to rebuild, the 'box and ancillaries are worth 5-600

obviously an engine builder/mini shop would charge more than that, but they'll be providing some form of warranty

but I'm a known tightarse, so am probably lowballing significantly aren't I

mini & moke charge $6k+your old engine & box for a rebuild 1100 & gearbox if that helps any.

$5-6 thousand dollars to rebuild a motor where parts are available and reasonably inexpensive. Someone is having a laugh.

I'd would guess between $2-$3k. As Simon K said, engine builders would offer warranties etc so the cost would be greater. Add a rebuilt gearbox and diff and you would expect the higher costs. Mini & Moke world would have completly rebuilt everything and included some performance mods as they claim the same power as Cooper S I think. Maybe includes the Cooper S tax if thats the case!!!

My guess at the length of string would be $1500.
You didn't make it clear if YOU rebuilt it; or if it was rebuilt. Price goes down if it was your effort! : )

There is engine rebuilding and then there is engine rebuilding.

Rebuilt within tolerances utilising refurbished parts inside spec, eg- Ridge remove on bores and new rings

Rebuilt within tolerance using all new parts (where available) eg- bore and hone, fit new pistons from the supplied box

Rebuilt targeting best tolerances eg-Stress plate bore and hone hot using new matched pistons normally from 4 different boxes and targeting clearances, hone angle/grit to suit the application.

So to buy a rebuilt engine you need to know the parts used and the process level of the rebuilder. The less you know of both the less i'd pay.

With the new Australian Consumer Law, I'd buy from a registered business and have them make a life and power statement, get the engine dyno'd and follow their maintenance directions. Your outlay is somewhat protected and represents more value.

1100 engine $200 - $4500
