Hi guys

So I recently got my car back from the mechanics. It had been in there to get the engine fired up for the first time (Which sounds amazing). Whilst restoring the car I decided to put 4 stabilisers on the engine

1x stabiliser above clutch/solenoid bracket
2x bottom stabilisers on the rod change

1x 'ultimate stabiliser' on the thermostat housing. -

http://minispares.com/product/Classic/E ... K1301.aspx

Seemed like a really good stabiliser but when I got the car back yesterday the mechanic advised me to take it off because it may foul on my radiator and eventually destroy it.

So what do you guys run in terms of stabilisers? Do I need all 4 or am I okay to take the stabiliser off? It's not a race car but will be driven 'spirited' like occasionally.

Thanks in advance

James

The rod change engines had both top stabilizers and no bottom stabilizers (I knew you could get a stabilizer for down there - I didn't know you could get 2!). I don't see why this would foul the radiator - is it that much further to the side that the normal sandwich plate type?

If so, you could just get a sandwich type bracket and put one in, but you will probably need to weld a bracket to the bulkhead if there isn't one there already.

how far from the radiator is it?

I don't imagine it'd be all that close. For there to be any real risk, it'd have to be less than 5mm

Me too but I think we both have remote gearboxes which don't rock around as much as rod change would?

That said I haven't had many issues but yes, the studs on the head where the thermostat is aren't the strongest on the car either. When I did it, made sure the 3 threads, studs and nuts there were in pristine condition.

Nah mine is Rod Change, Im actually going to replace the mounting rubbers on it. I think they are the same as the tie bars. They are starting to fail....

You should be able to see the two gearbox staiblizers running from the box backwards to the subframe in this pic;

Yeah these would be better overall, or just have as many as you can fit on. Really you can't have too many engine stabilisers...

I've been using the older version of the Minispares MSSK1300 in my Moke for over 10 years, can't see how it would foul the radiator.

As you can (maybe) see in the photo, the space between the edge of the radiator cowling and the stabiliser is almost touching

Yeah but the radiator and shroud will move the same as the engine. Its all tied together moving the same amounts. Shouldn't worry anything.

yeah, maybe cut a bit of the radiator shroud, but I'd leave it as is and see if there is a problem, it's not a big deal

Is it possible your top radiator stay is too short? Can you post a pic of the entire thermostat, radiator and back to the bulkhead area.

Something funny going on there, my photo shows a much bigger gap.
