Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but I did a search and could not find any mention. http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/river-he ... 1039846463
I can see a few things that dont seem quite right, and was just looking for some input from the forum.

I wonder what the 'matching numbers' actually match?

The quoted body number puts it as a May/June 1970 built car, not 1969. If so it will have an ADR compliance plate behind the brake booster which will show the car type as YG2S4 (no K). Lucas AL136 two-screw tail lights would've been fitted by then, not the three-screw as shown. I believe this car has been through Paul Gulson's hands at some stage.

What things don't seem right?

I put the YG2S4 2022 as 8/1970 and it will have a square compliance plate. The YKG2S4 is not a true number but has popped up a few times in the past. I have seen new MK1 ID plates stamped as YKG2S4 and I believe it is from people trying to fake the 1969 MK2 Cooper S which has no plate.

I have a saved photo from an Ebay sale of Gulsonpower and it is a MK1 Plate stamped YKG2S4 989 with a blank spot for an engine number.

There's been lots of discussion about when the K was dropped from the MK II Series cars. Based on various company documents I've seen I believe they used YKG2S4 until the introduction of the compliance plate in January 1970. The page below is from the MK II Series parts book PUB1056M and shows the Lockheed booster being used from the first MK II S (car 501) until car 1613, which is around Feb/Mar 1970, when the PBR VH-44J unit replaced it. You'll see both forms of body prefix are referenced in the change point data at the bottom.

So that means every 1969 MK2 S should have the YKG2S4 stamped on the Rad shroud. I haven't seen that. Does anyone on here have a genuine 1969 MK2 S that can confirm this?

I have had a few 1969 Cooper 'S' over the years and they have all had YG2S4 on the radiator shroud

Not necessarily. Different parts of the company sometimes used different versions of codes and other parts references. I'm simply pointing out that YKG2S4 was used as prefix in some BMC documentation, such as the parts book. Whether some early 1969 cars were stamped that way or not remains to be seen.

If it is a genuine 'S', 25K is not a bad price. Apart from the walnut dash and doubt over the chassis prefix it looks OK.

I see your point.

I have pulled out of 2 purchases of 1969 Mk2's because things didn't line up. They would be the most faked IMOI. Many have had their numbers restamped in the past with NP numbers because they weren't correctly identified by the RTA or the Blue Slippers.

9er - Hervey Bay is a long way away. Are you just window shopping at the moment or do you need someone to go and have a look for you. First and main issue is the Compliance plate. I would ask for a photo of the plate because the numbers quoted are not correct.

Watto's article on the 1969 Cooper S in issue 14 of TME has pictures of the radiator cowl stamping for cars 1119 and 1237. Both have YG2S4.

Unfortunately I don't have documentation or photos for the MK II S I purchased new in October 1969. The registration certificate and insurance paper only has the engine number, not the car number or prefix. Photography was time consuming and very expensive back then.
