Post subject:  Gearbox - Stripped Third Motion Retainer Hole

Hi,

I was working on rebuilding my Moke's gearbox today (late A+). Everything was going swimmingly until I tightened up the bolts on the third motion shaft retainer. The lower bolt hole that holds the layshaft and reverse shafts in place stripped.

I've already pulled the layshaft and reverse idler shaft out. It looks like I can drill the hole out and heilcoil it back to 5/16 UNF or UNC without too much problem. I will have to cut down the helicoil before fitting though, as the gearbox web is rather thin at this place and I don't want the end of the helicoil hanging out the back and possibly fouling on the reverse idler.

Can anyone see an issue with this?

Thanks,

Nope, but use a little loctite on the shortened helicoil to stop it driving through or moving.
Helicoils are superb.

I have done this mod many times:
The stripped hole is now 5/16" dia = tapping size for 3/8" UNC.
Tap it out to 3/8 UNC and drill the bearing retainer and layshaft keep plate 10.0mm for clearance.
Don't bother with a helicoil in there, the thread is too short to be reliable.
You will not strip a 3/8 UNC bolt, but ensure it's not too long or it will hit the reverse gear idler.
Don't bother with a locktab, use a new 3/8 spring washer, and Loctite on the threads if you like.
