Hi guys

So I'm starting to run in the new metro A+ in my deluxe. I've done around 40-50km's now and have started to already notice a problem.

I've read a little bit about the dreaded '2nd gear crunch' but thought I'd ask because I'm not sure if it's a worn baulk ring or not.

I'm running a fully rebuilt engine and gearbox - and I've put a genuine KAD quickshifter in. I'm not changing the gears fast by any means but I was wondering if the KAD could possibly be causing my crunchy change? I'm not a huge fan of the KAD and will probably take it out very soon, but could this be causing my issue? I'm really hoping it's nothing worn that may of been missed being replaced so suggestions would be great

Thanks
James

fingers crossed it's just the quickshift, I think I've read before that they're just a bit too fast for them

my mate had a horrid time with 2nd gear on a gearbox I rebuilt for him... everything I'd done was good, but it turned out the dogs on the 2nd gear were just rooted. Something I'd not known about - basically everything was right but it was always going to fail because of that

I really hope it is too. Going up the gears it seems fairly fine but as soon as you go 3-2nd it has a slight crunch, double clutching helps a bit but you shouldn't have to on a new box.

I must admit I'm a bit worried from all that I've read on this topic. Took 8 months to get the car back on the road, the last thing I want to do is take the engine out again.

It could be poorly made (oval, wrong taper) new baulk rings, I've seen crook baulk rings take 5000km to bed in.
There are good ones sold again now, Karcraft and Minis Plus ones fit OK.

Or weak detent springs in the 1-2 synchro hub. I've noticed that the usual replacement springs sold now are weaker than originals. So on my last 2 gearbox rebuilds I've used the stronger Minisport ones-

Swap the gearstick over first, then report back.

I posted this a while back re: KAD quick shift after reading everyone's input I decided against getting one! I hope this helps!

So theoretically the baulk rings could still be bedding in and be causing some of the grief?

I talked to the mini business that built my engine down in Melbourne and they said they replaced all baulk rings, synchros and a new 2nd gear.

That was a good read! I didn't see that post when I did a search for KAD quickshifts. It gives me a little more confidence that it is what is causing the problem.

I'll have the gear lever changed in the next couple of days and will report back

Thanks :)

Yes baulk rings can be a problem if their taper and roundness doesn't match the taper on the gear.
I have a couple of new ones here I will never use- they are both oval and tapered (wrong angle), they will not stay on the taper when twisted on by hand. As correctly machined ones will.

Hey everyone.

So the KAD is out and took it for a spin... Wow, what a difference!

The gears are a lot smoother and the 3-2 crunch is all but gone.

Thanks for all your input :)
