Yes, all Oz Minis got a Lucas bendix type starter. There are other options- for example, 1.6L Gemini (file the mounting holes to fit), Bosch planetary geared starter from `convertible mini' on here. Both these starters are pre-engaged type. [edit] There are also hi-torque starters similar to this one at Mini Mania, USA- Minis Plus once sold a similar one, not sure if they still do these days. ![]() |

I contacted GM for the Gemini starter cranking torque, it turns out the mini Lucas had a specified higher cranking torque. Pity about the Gemini one, I'd bought and modded. I guess it's always prudent to have a well charged battery and clean all the earth points. |

Gemini starter pulls less power, true, but it has less drive friction, because the drive pinion is not overhung way out past the shaft bush. And, being pre-engaged, it does not throw itself out of mesh and go `whirrrrr!!' if the motor gives an isolated kick. You can just hold the key on until the bugger starts. ![]() [edit] It's used standard on 1.6L Isuzu motors, and overseas on 1.8L ones I think. There are Chinese copies sold here, but I had problems with the solenoid sticking on, so an Isuzu/GM original is better, IMO. A downside of the Gemini is it is in the road of a Cooper S oil cooler, unless that's moved >>. |
