Hi, A question for the doc or others. I've had a 9FXey Mk2 engine sitting here for about 20 plus years. It had been dismantled and oiled up and wrapped in glad wrap. The other day I decided to open it up to refresh my memory as I thought I'd sell it as I don't need/want it any more. To my horror I found that it had been dropped at sometime in the last when ever and the rear main bearing cap which was just sitting over the studs and not bolted down was bent and the 2 studs have broken a small piece away from the base of the 2 studs as deep as the step on the stud. Being the end cap and not a centre one is it still usable or is it an anchor? Sorry I don't know how to post pics. Tony |

Have you got a picture of the damage? Perhaps a larger stepped replacement locator could be machined into a similarly machined location? |

I doubt it would be weldable, someone that specialises in welding may be able to help. If it was mine, I'd fit new studs and use it. Probably not for a high HP motor but standard rebiuld would be ok. Most of the forces push on cap. |

That has broken away right where the stress is created, when the stud nuts are tightened to 55+ ft/lb. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news for a rare block, but I think it's toasted.  Sure, it could be gas welded with manganese bronze or nickel bronze (or maybe use TIG) but being cast iron, I'd not risk it. It's not just a chunk out of a block in an under-stressed area. |

thanks Doc, I kinda had a feeling that may have been the case. Bummer  well the crank rods and main caps will still be handy. |

Hi, I have the std crank which will need a regrind and the rods and pistons. the block is 40 thou over. Pm with an offer. if you like. thanks. |

Take it to a cylinder head specialist and have it cast iron welded properly. It will need to be stripped bare and require a line bore and appropriate machining afterwards but its worth it, S blocks are not exactly easy to come by these days. |

Their are a number of welding techniques that can be used to repair this type of material, agreed that a specialist welder would be required. I have repaired similar damage using a powdered system call Eutalloy, expensive but effective !. Mal

Could the whole bearing web be machined away, a new web/saddle be machined up and welded in or bolted in? |

Hi, I'm going to take it to a local old school engine shop and see what they think. Failing that i've had a few offers for it I'm considering. Or the coffee table sounds good but I can't see the missus going for it. |
