This is another one, its in the How-To. viewtopic.php?f=25&t=84418 You can take your bolts as you collect them, including washers, spring washers, plates and fabrications etc off to a Zinc Plater to have them replated. Throw everything in is my advice, exclude the hi-tensile head bolts, they won't retain their tensile strength, but everything else will come up great. A 20 litre bucket cost 80 dollars last time. That's maybe 20 or 30 kilograms of stuff. They look a million dollars, and its cheaper in all by half maybe. |

Mick for a noob like myself how do you tell the difference between hi tensile and a normal bolt? |

Bolts are marked with strikes on the bolt head, Like in this link. They're usually black in finish, like a head bolt or wheel stud for example. http://www.hi-tensilebolt.com.au/Head%20Markings.html The ones to not include off the top of my head would be the head bolts/studs, as well as the big end bolts/studs, main bearing bolts/studs, and their respective nuts. Also the steering column pinch bolt, brake caliper bolts, steering arm bolts, wheel studs, in fact any part on the brakes except the backing plates or dust covers which come up great. Everything else on the car can be thrown through the process. Then I sort them into tubs at the back end ready for use. Years later I am still running off the profits of an 80 dollar investment in plating a bucket full of bits. Springs need to be put in an oven at hi temp (max on a home oven) for a couple of hours to be normalised, but the plater will usually do this for you. ![]() |

Hi Mick, where did you get your plating done? |

You will need to go to Melbourne or Sydney most likely and you need to ask for a barrel plating process for the bucket of nuts and bolts. I was living in Melbourne until 3 years ago, so had them done at Alliance Electroplating at Campbellfield. There are plenty about, look up electroplating on Google Maps and start calling around. |

Avin Plating in Melbourne quoted me about $50 for 8-10kg of nuts and bolts. He made it very clear that they cannot have any paint on them, but general grease and road grime should be ok. |

Thanks willy, I might steal the list to add to the How-To if that's ok. Yeah, they get narky and may reject the bucket if its all too dirty. I can understand why, it ruins their cleaning baths unnecessarily. I soak my bucket in a few litres of petrol to remove the worst of the oil and grease before handing them over. |

Mick, Happy to have it added if it helps out. All of these fasteners can easily be sourced locally. |
