Hi Guys,

My pedals are quite stiff/noisy and I don't think they've had any love in a long time so I'm going to pull the box out and give it a touch up. Are there any bushes or anything in there that should be replaced while I've got it out? Are the return springs generally good for life or should they be swapped out as well? Or is it just a case of remove, lube and refit?

I'm guessing I'll pull the steering column, couple of heater hoses, master cylinders and it should just come out? I've heard about sheer bolts being used or was this only in the newer ones (this is a 62 Morris 850).

Is there anything else in there I should look at while the pedal box is out? I just want to make sure I've got all the parts and tools before I get stuck in as I only have time to do it after work and everything closes at 5pm over here in Wait Awhile.

I believe the shear bolts are only on the steering column lock so I don't think your 850 will have to deal with them.

You can take them apart, and they may just need some grease put through the pedal box bushes.

The spring sometimes breaks, but it might just be that its all a little dry.

No need to take the pedal box out, just the pin and pedals perhaps?

I've just taken out the steering column. Took a lot longer than expected because some idiot forgot to completely remove the pinch bolt from the bottom before trying to rip it out. That same idiot also took awhile to realize why it wasn't coming out, even after applying the BFH. The same idiot now needs a new pinch bolt, no biggy. It's gotten a bit dark to continue as the wife latest hobby of taking all the things inside the house and putting them into the shed has kicked the mini outside.

I think you're right Mick. I may just remove the pin and the pedals and grease them up. I hit them with a bit more penetrating spray and they seem to be loosening up so hopefully that's all I need.

The springs aren't broken but they seem to be encased in 50 years of gunk and filth so might be a good idea to clean them up before they go back in.

So, I tried to knock the pin out with the pedal box in place. I removed the heater first as I quickly worked out that the pin will not slide out with the heater in place. No biggy, finger tight racing here so the heater box was moved in a matter of minutes. Undid the nut on the pin, gave it a little love tap, nothing. Gave it a more definite tap, no movement. Got the pry bar in there and still no go. So I removed the pedal box and gave the pin a proper whack. Stuck fast. So in the press it went. At the point where I thought the whole pedal box was going to bend in half and yelling some language my mother would not be proud of, the pin FINALLY let go.

I now have it all separated and ready to clean up and put back in. I'm guessing that these should not be that difficult to get out so a clean up with some wet and dry and much lube will be used. Hopefully this was my problem with the pedal being stiff and sticking and if it isn't, well I'm sure this needed doing anyway.

Will update when it's all back together.

Haha, yeah you would have thought they would have a grease point on the pedal into the bushes. It's prompted me to go around to my other minis and pop the pin and grease them up before this happens to one of them as well. I swear when the pin finally popped on this one it was the first time it had seen sunlight or maintenance since 1962...

Quick question. There appear to be two brass bushing in each pedal. On the clutch pedal they are pushed in only to the outer edge so there is a ~5mm gap between them in the middle of the pedal. On the brake pedal one is pushed in to the outer edge and the other pushed all the way in so it butts up to the other bush leaving no gap. Are they supposed to be one way or the other or it really doesn't matter?

Dont think it matters. A gap in the middle will give you a channel to hold grease

Well I've cleaned up the pedal box and greased it all up. What a difference!! I haven't had a chance to put it back in the car yet but I can already tell this will make all the difference.
