So I have a '98 Rover, Jap Import, Manual with Air-Con.

I've been trying to dig up information lately regarding my MEMS ECU, and I just want to understand a bit better what I've got. It's the two plug ECU (36 + 18pin), and I'd like to know if it's a MEMS 1.3, 1.9 etc. Part of why I started digging is to understand the pin-outs on the second plug. There are about 5 wires that look like they went into the second plug (18 pin) at one point, but now there is only one wire remaining connected to that plug. I've been referencing this for the pin-outs, but it only goes up to '96.

Digging further, I found some info on MiniSpares which leads me to believe that there may have been a specialized ECU for the Jap Rover cars, and in the description of this product they reference "TWIN SOCKET jAPAN SPEC SPI WITH MPI ENGINE BLOCK 1996 -2000". There can't be a difference in the block, right??

Alright FI brains trust. What information might you have that will help me along my journey?
And if you have a 2 plug ECU, I'd really really like to know what pins are actively connected to it, if you find the time do a quick inventory. As always, thanks.

The 18 pin plug only has one wire that does something: its one of the coil pack triggers. The other one is in the big plug....why they did that i dont know. There are extra wires in the plug but they are dummies to give the loom/plug connection some more strength.

The 97 onwards jap spinminis run uk spec mpi blocks, these blocks dont have a distributor hole, the oil filter is in a different place, and theres a cam angle sensor hole on the back of the block.

they did this because MEMS truly stands to its name "Modular". inside are quite a lot of places where the factory could ad features. thats why you can find functions that other ECUs don't have at strange pins.
i have tried to revers engineer the MEMS ECUs but don't have my notes at hand

could you take a picture of you ECU? because MEMS 1.6 and 1.9 can have the small plug fitted to ad an ignition driver and other features. MEMS 1.3 generally have both plugs

Alright guys - again, thanks for all the help. Here's some photos of the ECU and connected plugs.

First, the 18pin. The only connected wire is the top left pin in this photo. Which, according to the linked pdf up top is pin 8, and would be for the turbo (wrong). Also, assuming this is "pin 8", there are two more wires (2 & 6) coming out of the plug but are not connected. It appears they have never been connected, as they have never been stripped back to expose wire. I'm also assuming the the photo in the pdf represents the ECU pins, and not the plug on the loom.

As for the ECU, here are the only visible markings on it.
Main Plug Sticker: 11A370P3H
ECU Body: GQ 1908
MNE101351 (4123)

And the Rover Serial number, which cant be seen in the photos is 1908101351

The link above has little relevance to your wiring.

As mentioned, the used wire in the 18 pin socket goes to the coil pack, the other two wires are dummies......they have no connection or function other than to give the loom more strength.

What are you trying to work out or modify from all of this?

thanks for the pic.
it is a MEMS 1.6

the pin is not pin 8, it's pin 18. this one goes, as said, to the second ignition driver place at the PCB.
to show how the pins are numbered, the dummy wires are pin 5 and 11. pin 1 closest to your index finger.
