If you hit any of them, the column bends, and the wheel tilts forwards into the windscreen. World's first `collapsible steering column'. I know that because of this car which hit a tree in 1965, and I was riding shotgun. ![]() |

So in theory could we make our own steering wheels? |

There is an ADR that applies to Clubby shaped cars, their pedal box was modified to weaken the column mount, and assist the forward bending in an accident. I don't know the ADR number or the date, I think it's probably around Jan 1972. If you have an earlier car there's probably no legality problem making a bespoke wheel. But Mr Plod may not like it. Note, IANAL... ![]() |

But if you make a steering wheel is that then a "new" item that should meet with the ADRs when it was made? More of a general point of discussion regarding any modification rather than steering wheel specific. |

Nope, but I spent 21 weeks in hospital with left leg in traction, had 21 stitches in my head, & a broken arm. Nothing serious... ![]() [edit] and 10 months off work. Only good thing- the leg x-ray kept me out of going to Vietnam... We got run off the road by a dill in a Porsche overtaking on a blind corner. The Mini's driver spent 1 night in hospital- a broken arm and facial stitches. |
