So I finally have my OZ 1970 Cooper S on the road. Now I want to get my locks and keys sorted.

Currently I have:

- one key each for each fuel tank cap;
- one key for the ignition;
- no key for the door lock,
- no key for the boot.

Can anyone recommend a locksmith in Melbourne that could sort me out with one key to do the ignition, driver's door and boot lock?

I am in Fitzroy.

Hey, you have the same numbers as keys as me, but only because I don't have twin tanks! My drivers and passenger side doors also have different keys.

Interested to hear the answer too. Can you just change all the barrels?

I believe barrels for the Oz windup door lock are NLA, however John Smidt said a boot lock one can be modified to fit.

Watch the locksmith doesn't bugger your barrels when trying to rekey them. Often they leave tumbler pins out if they have no spares, and somehow they managed to break my boot lock.
Karcraft and Minis Plus have new boot locks cheap, with keys.

And be aware both the boot and door handle must be unlocked before their barrels can be removed.

I took a trip to a local locksmith.
So, now I have different keys for:

1. Right hand fuel tank;
2. Left hand Fuel tank;
3. Ignition;
4. Battery lock out;
5. Drivers door;
6. Bootlid.

Bleeding crazy.

The better part of 30 years ago I had an issue with a mismatched door lock and ignition. Took them to a local locksmith and problem sorted. Haven't needed to go back since, so he could well have retired.
You probably need to find an old school locksmith to at least get the door, ignition and boot barrels matching. That's how BMC had it originally. But most worn early Mini locks can be opened by just about any Mini key anyway.

How can you have so many keys. My whole collection only has 5!

i have one to fit ignition and 1 to fit door and boot me and my brother made the door and the boot match not hard to do at all

Ditto to all the keys for mine too.

I am thinking about fitting old style non locking fuel caps so at least I could dump 2 keys....
But that might not be the brightest idea though

My mini hasn't had a locking cap for the last couple of years, no dramas. I think the low-life's who steal gas are more likely to do a drive-off from the gas station, at least that way they get more than the 10l they'd get choking on gas sucked through a pipe in my car!

Current car has two key's (ignition on column), however project nearing finishing is looking like 3 or 4...might have to do something about that. I stripped down an ignition barrel a while back, and door locks. In both cases there is a number stamped on the body - I was under the impression any locksmith (as opposed to a guy who cuts keys at the local hardware shop) could modify any barrel to be any number?

In the past the cheap way of keying a barrel was to put the key in and carefully file down the protruding tags. If the profile of the original key is fairly close to the barrel there will be plenty left to lock effectively. Bit of a bodge but it works and saves having a heap of different keys
