I think we could rattle off that the car is pre-ADR (presuming as it has an ID plate on the firewall we're not talking a clubman right?) and therefore the plate is only a reference point. There is not a VIN number assigned against the car, and therefore the plate is not much more than an identification number for reference. |

Then the registrar may complain about it, but the car is pre-ADR. It is the VIN number which is the crucial point for car registrations, and these didn't come in until after 1973(ish). The ID was not much more than a reference for the manufacturer and dealer on the lot, which then became handy for local governments for the collection of taxes against the owner. After 73 it became a mandated reference for the car's identity. |

Yes it is a reference used to identify the car as an individual, but I wouldn't use the term "VIN equivalent" around them as they may try to give you grief. They prefer to register a nice easy commodore, falcon or camry with their fancy post-ADR VIN number. There's no thinking involved. |

Cheers Brad Brad, It's January 1970 that ADR plates were first fitted to Minis. As additional design rules came into being the plate was progressively updated to add the new reference numbers that applied at that time. The end result is that there are whole range of slightly different plates used during Mini production from 1970 onwards. For example, the ADR's shown on my September 1970 car are 4 (Seat Belts), 5A (Seat Belt Anchorage Points), 7 (Hydraulic Brake Hoses) and 20 (Safety Rims). The list of ADR's and their release date is here - http://www.infrastructure.gov.au/roads/ ... _adrs.aspx |

I know they were fitted earlier than 1972 because I have another clubman that is an earlier body number than mine that had that plate fitted. It was the current QLD RWC Vehicle Inspection Guidlines is where I found that information. Thanks for the correction Winnabbey. Cheers Brad |
