Post subject:  another 69 MK11 Cooper s

Hi Guys I need a Cooper S guru.I am this w/end looking at a 69 MK11 Cooper S in a shed unregisterd for a number of years. The guy who owns it is elderly & claims 2 previous owners. The numbers stack up as a mid 69 s.The radiator shroud number is YKG2S4 5-- & looks very origional with a very low number matching mid 69.The engine number is around the same date,9FXEY ----- All the tabs in the boot for fuel breathers are spot welded as I can see from the photos. The RH fuel tank has the 2 brackets behind the rear seat for the mountings. Will this Cooper have an ID plate? It will not have a Vin as the were not used till Jan 1970 is that correct?Any help appreciated.
Cheers Kath

Im not Cooper S expert (I know more about GT's) but

69 will not have an ID tag
Radiator shroud should not be YKG2S4, it should just be YG2S4

Check under the backseat, the footwell for a petrol tank breather plug also

The very early Mk2s may have come with an ID plate and the YKG2S4 prefix.
If the car is in the low 500's it is an early car. (car 501 was the 1st.)

The body number in the radiator shroud is YKG2S4 580 The engine number is 9FXEY51644 this equates to around 8/69.The guy knows what it may be worth & it is a bit steep as it looks like it needs some work.I will take some pics & post them.I cant see from the pics if there is an ID plate so I am wondering if it will have one?
Cheers Kath.

Kath,
If you haven't already, study these links. Early MkII S as discussed on ausmini a couple of weeks ago. Study the photos on the eBay listing and that's a great guide to what you should be looking at for YG 2S4 580. The 80th built and probably built by the end of May 69.

What state (as in Vic/Nsw/ etc) are you talking for this one?

It is in NSW went & had a look at it today,it is a genuine MK11.Went over it with a fine tooth comb. The motor & gearbox were rebuilt 3 years ago with all the correct mods & upgrades, the body & paint need total restoration, there are some large dents under the foot wells from rocks ect, there appears to be no rust.as far as I can see it is a very genuine early MK11 number 80',numbers in the radiator cowling YG2S4580 match the engine numbers for around the same date.Do you have an idea of what I might offer him for it,I know it is hard without looking at it but genuine Cooper S Mk11 are very hard to find.

Hard to say! Maybe compare what you have seen with the following 1969 Mk2 that sold on ebay a few weeks ago for $13,100?

Kath,
You may want to remove or edit this post. Slander can land you in serious hot water.

According to the Cooper S register this car would most likely have had a May or June 1969 delivery date, based on details of cars around it. Chassis number 580 is in the register but without an engine number listed. The engine number you quoted above sounds right for this date. Under colour it says "now red", whatever that means. The metal mark 1 type heaters were still being installed at this point in production, not the later plastic bodied ones. It probably also had the Lockheed booster, not the later PBR VH-44. If the car has been repainted then you may not be able to see the remains of the adhesive used to stick the sound deadener mats under the bonnet and under the rear parcel shelf, another way to identify a genuine Cooper S.

Kath - If you are able to determine the original colour(s) of the body and the upholstery I'd like to add these to the register, regardless of whether you purchase it or not.

If all you have said is correct and I was after such a car I would pay up to $15,000.

Winabby - the colour I am almost certain was Red as the hood lining is torn and I can see the original paint under there. It was all Red no other colour on the roof. Upholstery is Black.

Thanks Kath. I'll assume Jet Red as that's the factory red colour for a 1969 MK II.
