I'm having trouble with my drivers door. The handle has excessive slop before it starts to activate the rods to open the door, such that it only has a slight movement right at the end of its travel which means the door doesn't open easily (sometimes at all).

Anyone come across this - what's the fix? (and no smart arse say install roundie doors )

working inside the door.......loosen the 2 nuts holding the door handle to the door frame. You can then adjust the position of the handle itself, thus reducing the amount of free play in it.

I think that's how I did mine.

That loose feel to clubby door handles drives me crazy.

If it's the outside handle, you have to adjust the two bolts holding it in from the inside to get as much leverage as possible.

If it's the inside handle, remove the trim and follow the rod attached to the handle itself. Near the lock end you'll see two bolts attaching the rod to the lock mechanism. Just adjust these two bolts to get as much comfortable tension for when you turn the handle. Don't get it too tight though or the rod will pop out when you go to unlock the door.

you'll probably find that the hole in the back of the handle where the little tierod goes from inside the door has worn away or even broken off. If this is the case and assuming all the internal door handle rods are adjucted properly, you can buy a little circular bearing thing with a grub screw and use this to hold the tierod in place(but only if the alloy housing isn't broken).

I adjusted the door tonight using Anton's method and that did the trick. It is not perfect, but at least it opens reasonably smoothly. It was getting to the stage it wouldn't open at all before tonight.
