Hi from New Zealand.
I am new to this forum and would like some advice on a Mini Cooper S I am looking at.
It is a Mk1, 1968 and has a chassis # KA 2S 6 12511..
What does the" 6" mean ? Does this line up with a 1968 model.
Looking at the Register, the 7 digit number seems too long.
The engine # is 9F SA Y 408..
This number seems to be from Sept 1966, by referring to your register and also John Parnell's Bible.
What are your views?
Craig

KA2S6 would be a UK made Mk2 Cooper or S. Should be a 7 digit car number

9FSAY means a 1275 S

Maybe try Mk1-forum as they are into UK made cars - or if you have Parnells book that should cover it. You should be able to get a heritage cert from BMH too with all your cars details

John,
Do you have the records that match engine numbers to chassis numbers?
This is definitely an Australian car, will check the stamped numbers on radiator shroud and bulkhead.

Craig,
The marque registers hosted on this forum are for Australian built cars only. KA2S6 is a UK assembled car so the registers are of no help in this case.

As Tim mentioned you can get a production certificate from British Motor Heritage in the UK that will show the information you are seeking.

Is there an ID plate anywhere on the body shell ?

Parnell has the first Mk2 Cooper S as 1068451 (September 67) and the last as 1375346 (January 1970)

If that one is 125xxxx then 1968 sounds good. It’d also have a UK build plate and commission number plate

What style windows are in the doors - sliding or wind-up?

Might be like that Red car in Japan that we were talking about recently. They stuck a UK tag on an Aussie shell. viewtopic.php?f=2&t=99918

Thanks Winabbey and others.
I am aware of most of the points you have made.
This is definitely an Aussie Cooper S, I know quite a few of the distinguishing marks etc, has wind up windows, drilled holes in gutter, 120 mph speedo etc etc.
It obviously has a dodgey ID plate on it, which will diminish the value of the car considerably.
Seems the car was imported into NZ in 1991, and serial number on plate is on the NZ rego documents, so false plate probably fitted before it came.
It is a genuine BMC (Aus) plate, but hand stamped from the front, not the rear as factory fitted.
There is no way of finding the true chassis number, so it is what it is, a car with a false plate!!!
Thanks again for your help.
Craig

Have you checked the 3 places that the chassis and body numbers were stamped? Behind the Master cylinders. Top of the radiator shroud. Drain Gutter above the wiper motor.

There is another one in NZ that is similar. It was given the chassis number K-A2S4 577178. Have you seen this car?

All does not look kosher with those photos. The ID plate is for an Australian Cooper S and has car number YG2S4 752. The number on the radiator shroud has a finger in the way, right where the car number prefix is. What is stamped there? The car number on the rad shroud is way too high for an Australian Cooper S. On an Australian Mk2 Mini YG2S should be one stamp, with 4 a separate stamp, then all the body number digits as separate stamps. It would be worth checking the scuttle drain chanel, at the rear of the bonnet aperture, above the wiper motor. You might need to sand away the paint to see the numbers. There should be M2/06 then the body number, which should be approximately 500 less than the car number. So, if the ID plate is correct, then the body number should be somewhere around 250, give or take a little. The single most important stamping on the car, if it is an Australian body, is the M2/06, as that shows the body was originally made for a Cooper S, with all the associated brackets, etc. If it is M2/04 or M2/05 then it is not a genuine Cooper S.

MK2 S is 2/06
MK1 S is M2/06

You are correct about the Chassis number and ID plate. But apparently its ok to reshell cars in NZ.

Yes, my mistook. No M in the Mk2 code. So, it is likely to be a reshelled car. But if it ever came back to Australia it would not be legal. The problem is, as a reshelled car, it will be sold in NZ as the original car, just like in the UK, which is a can of worms that people have debated about for millenia - see Ship Of Theseus on the interweb.
