took the grill out today the do an oil change and noticed that most of the screw holes have been stripped, so please tell me how to repair the stripped threads so the screws retain their grip, I know someone will have a simple solution other than welding and re drilling, so your experienced advice will be welcomed. dolly on the front and a few light taps with a hammer on the back will flatten the lip out in the area of the screw holes. The screws should then be able to hold again.

If this does not work, go for Simon's solution.

I thought of that, but engine bay really full and no way of getting behind, and big screws would look awful from the front and there fairly big at the moment, would really like to repair them and use normal size screws if possible

When I was faced with this dilemma I thought about how much I liked the 2 knob grille removal option however I was not convinced as I find them to be very practical but un attractive. I decided to go with a variation on the concept by using 2 large stainless screws that were concealed between the slats. Hidden, fast to remove and no one is the wiser as to how the grille is held in.

what a great idea, but the other holes look a bit crappy, I tried the buttons but couldnt get behind the grill to install them so your idea sound good, so as you can see, there are some really good ideas out there, so hopefully someone else can benefit from this thread, thanks again for all the alternatives to my little problem.

I put a single M6 socket head capscrew in each side, from the back, then put a locknut on them. I use a home made thin wall brass spacer washer on the front of the grille, with an M6 S/S nut.
I spin the 2 nuts up with a 1/4 drive 10mm socket and a plastic handled driver.

For the two lower screws (the ones near the indicators) I used a plastic chair/stool foot with a hole drilled in it. You just reach behind and hold it while you unscrew.

Just a thought, in addition I can highly recommend these grill spacers.

They were used on the cooper S to keep the grill away from the oil cooler but could be used on any mini. Because they keep the screw attached to the grill it makes removing and fitting the grill so much easier.

A member had some made up at the time.
