Hi All,

I'm at the stage where I'm ready to start stripping back my clubman for a respray, but am doing some last checks on how I'll get it all back together (filler / deadener wise). Around the inside rim of the gutter is what appears to be a bog, although now quite cracked and coming away in many places. I was just wondering if folks used the standard body filler to replace this, if at all? Is it just a matter of cleaning as best I can from in there with a wire brush and pushing the filler in?

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers,
Linden

i have the similar thing in my gutters, and im planning to just bog i and shape it with my finger, just rip it all out with a wire wheel...and then treat any rust?... s'all i'm doing, it should be alright, because the bog that was originally there was good...so the cracking is probally either from age or poor application, if you use a new wire wheel it will rough it up more  but then again i really have no idea or past experience with gutters before..

They were filled with ribcheck? (sp) or similar at the factory.
Best thing to fill it with these days is Sikaflex, IMO. It's polyurethane, stays flexible and you can paint over it.
Messy to put in though. Mask the roof side when you do it...

Thanks Doc - I'll hunt down some Sikaflex. Any idea on cost? Guess I won't need much....

From looking at it today I don't think u'd be able to get a wire wheel in there (ie. all the way up under the lip) as the roof would block it. I'll give it a shot, but at this stage am anticipating using a wire brush.

Cheers guys,
Linden

I used a wire brush.
Sikaflex is available here-
http://www.biasboating.com.au/fibglas_glue_sealnt.html

Scroll to bottom of page. 2 types, both work OK. I used it in white.

Also can get from auto paint stores.

Obviously you didn't read about it on the link above..
Sikaflex is made in Japan. It's a 1 part flexible polyurethane sealer. Paintable.
Body shops also use it for sticking spoilers back on when they fall orf..

Doc, is there any advantages to using this over bog? like is it less resistant to cracking, and or moisture, as the gutters would get alot of water in them wouldn't they?

Um yeah... it's waterproof, UV resistant, won't crack, paintable, flexible... want me to go on?
It's good crap...

It realy is great stuff - just get a heap of gloves when using it - it sticks to skin just as well as to metal.

And don't expect much reuse value out of the cartridge - as soon as you open it the whole cartridge dries out in days.

BTW available at Mitre 10 and Bunnings w'house etc.

Well - based on the rave reviews I'll be making a purchase of Sikaflex and rubber gloves any day now. (If you just read that sentence alone and out of context, it could be taken really quite badly  )

Can it also be used as a substitute for a bog filler (ie. for small panel dents, etc.)?
