Sorry, me again
There has been talk in various threads about how many engine steady's you should have.
I have an 850 with an 1100S engine and Rod Change gearbox.
The only engine steady is the one between the block and the body at the clutch end.
Do I need more and where :|

I only had one at the clutch end of the engine. I kept snapping it.

I now have one either end of the engine and 1 on the gearbox. Engine doesnt move at all.

The sencond top engine steady was added for the rod change box I think. Every rod change should have one, any movement where the rod enters the box results in leaks.

It is common to tear the bulkhead crossmember at the rad end when using that top steady.
Best way to reinforce it is to add an empty pedal box on that side.

Way back in the 850 days there were lower steadies available here, they worked fine until oil rotted the rubber bushes.

Top rad end steady is not needed with a remote shift. Cooper S never had or needed it.

My '73 Mini S came with two and still had the remote change. They must have been phasing them in ready for the introduction of rod change.

You can fit four steadies to an engine. 1st at the clutch end going from the block to the bulkhead below the MC's, 2nd is from the thermostat to the top of the bulkhead and like Doc said the best reinforcement/strength is by adding a gutted pedal box (all the holes are there), 3rd and 4th are on either side of the gearbox at the rear going to the subframe.
All can be made yourself or buy them all from most mini suppliers.

I think Rovers had a lower one, but it went forward.
