The strip down of the Cooper S is well underway, surprisingly little or no rust.Looking at old paperwork back to the mid 80s the car has spent most of its life in the country.Got the sand paper out & took to the gutter channel below the windscreen,I found the number 74 my car number is no 80.I also found a rather courious number a few centimetres along from the 74.It was 2/06,does anybody know what this number might indicate.I will post photos when I get a chance.
cheers.

2/06 is the body code issued to identify the MK2 Cooper S.

74 is the 74th body built.

Theoretically the first car was chassis 501 and it had body 001 but they didn't try to match the car number to 500 more than the body number.

If you look at the MK2 S register you will see the difference can be a dozen or so either side of the notional 500 difference.

On the MK2 range the body number and body code was stamped into the bonnet drain gutter above the wiper motor until May 1970 then it moved to the firewall under the paint sticker behind the master cylinders.
