Picked up a pair of these while overseas. http://www.minispares.com/product/Classic/Drivetrain/CV%20Joints/GCV1102.aspx?0801&ReturnUrl=/search/classic/Pot%20joint.aspx%7CBack%20to%20search

Does the drive shaft just push into the rubber boot - no external fastening?

Yes, or at least that's how they are on my mini. The rubber boot folds around and sits on a flange on the drive shaft. If you pull on the drive shaft there is enough movement in the boot to allow it to extend out a few cm.

Edit: The editor removes all spacing, so my horrible diagrams look even more horrible.

Original boots had a clip around the rubber on the shaft IIRC, but these boots don't because they are already clipped to the pot joint..

Interesting - not really surprised as the mechanic working on my mini previously has done some interesting work. Mine were attached to the shaft, but the rubber was thick enough to grab on quite strongly without the clip. The mechanic obviously couldn't be bothered putting it on.
