Hi all

So I went to put my new leads in (thanks GR) and noticed my distributor cap is quite loose. If you grab the cap you can move it quite considerably.

so two quick Q's

1) How does a loose cap affect performance (I'm thinking this could have something to do with my idle problem)

2) can you tighten the cap up? ( there's quite a lot of play on the two little clip thingy's, but the little screws appearing to hold them are solid tight :S )

Cheers
James

If it's got sideways movement it's because the crappy Chinese made caps are too big diameter to fit the dizzy body properly.
I found a new Lucas 45D cap the loosest.
You may find the plug cable posts can hit the rotor. I had to machine .5mm off my new rotor so it cleared.
Bloody aftermarket parts...

[edit] if the metal clips are loose, you can remove and bend them shorter in a vice.

Thanks Doc

The cap seems to fit ok-ish, I think the post sometimes catch the rotor though.

I'll chuck them in a vice and see what happens.

Is it possible it could be linked with my wanting to die idle, once the revs sort of get down below 1000rpm. I borrowed PhillB's colorTune and checked my mixture at idle. Lovely blue with only a slight tinge of orange. Which would be ok for idle ? Doesn't really feel like the plugs are fouling (I think)

If the rotor is hitting the cable lugs I would trim it slightly. Or you could break the cap.

re your idle problem, I think it's fuelling related-
Check the SU carby has a tiny nylon plug at the bottom which holds it clear of the jet bridge at idle.
If this wears away it can muck the idle up.
Also check for air leaks around the throttle spindle.
