Post subject:  Manifold with a difference

Hi all
Here's a new manifold I have been playing with, using an IDF Downdraft Weber. In a back to back comparison with a 45mm Sidedraft Weber and a fully ported short Redline manifold, it was 5-7Ft/lb of torque better across the board from 3-6500RPM. The 45mm wouldn't take full throttle below 3500 revs. Where as the downdraft would go down to 2500 revs. The beauty of this setup is you don't have fuel blowing back in your face through the speedo hole, and hopefully doing away with the fuel smells you get with the sidedrafts. And yes, it does clear the bonnet and you can get a thin air filter on it too... Just. :D

The great thing about the downdrafts are they are heaps cheaper. :)

Noice :-)
we ran a down draft weber years ago & it worked a treat
but i don`t know where it went
i suspect it was stolen, or dad may have sold it while i wasn`t looking :-)

When I first got my hands on my 1380 (in an Elf!) it ran a down draft off a cortina ( I think?)? Everybody told me how crap they were. Nobody could believe how the car went so well.... (yet they still told me the carb was crap....). Huh.

I was toying with the idea of trying a 32/36DGV downdraught Weber on my van. The carbs and manifold are available new from Minimania, Carbs Unlimited, Redline in the US complete with jetting kits. But again everyone says don't bother, they're crap (including Ketih Calver!)....

Yeah I had a similar 2 barrel downdraft to that, standard on my Fiat 124AC Sport.
But an IDF Weber is a totally different design to the old 2 barrel Webers used on Cortinas, Escorts, Fiats etc. This IDF works much the same as a sidedraft DCOE does. Each barrel feeds one head port. Much better for HP.

HI All
These carbies are like the 48IDA down draft weber that David Visard tells about in his book only they are smaller, the one i used is a 44mm IDF as used on Ferrari's they are much smaller in height than the IDA's so they don't have to go through the bonnet they also come in smaller sizes 40mm 42mm and the 44mm.

HI Hobson
Yes there is another small bore project it's about a 68mm motor how to do it as in boreing it and what to block off in the head and block, i will be trying different things like with the head i have fitted bigger inlet valves with no porting at all, i will dyno the motor take the head off modify the exhaust ports and see what the difference is HP wise and then do the inlet ports and see what the difference is, i will then try difference types of carbie set up's, as you can see in the photo's the motor is built just need a little time and help.

Is the manifold fabricated steel, GR?

So how big is the filter that will clear the bonnet? Do you have any pics of it in a mini?

IDA fits under the bonnet ...just not the ram tubes/filter......

IDFs were also used by Porsche (if you happen to have an old one lying around the back yard:). Probably more likely to find an old VW hotup kit.

Twin 40IDFs or Dellorto equivalent were used on 1971> Fiat 124BC Sport, people used to bung both these carbs on Geminis back in the day. Lynx made a manifold for them.

HI Poeee
Yes it is made out of steel.
Hi TK
On my LS1275 it has 1.5 ins clearance, on the net you can get filters for the IDF down to 25mm on the small bores it has more clearance, they use these carbs a lot in the USA on VW in off road vehicles, they are a very good little carb.
