good afternoon chaps. Just came home from a spirited run to the shops.. as I turned into my drive way I noticed a loud bang/knocking in time with the wheels rotation. I got out and checked the obvious, engine mounts, steady bushes, inner and outer CV's..... they all seemed fine.. Im thinking clutch release bearing? has anyone got any other ideas? Cheers |

Not good at all! The clutch shouldn't make a knocking like that in time with the rotating wheels. Might be time to get her up on stands and take a good look around. What kind of unis are there? Is the noise when you come on and off load? |

When ever the clutch is released. I have cv's not rubber crosses. It happens in a straight line and corners...... It's a noodle scratcher for sure |

So is it when the car is rolling or stationary? |

Moving. The loud knocking increases as road speed increases. |

so if you were to drive it, put your foot on the clutch and switch the engine off and let it roll, would the noise continue until the car rolled to a stop? |

Does it make the noise in any gear? Could be a tooth off the diff crownwheel? But you would also have some vibration. |

Could be a very worn or broken diff pin and stripped spider gears... Jack one side up, put in gear then rotate the jacked up wheel to and fr o to see how much slack there is. Then, put it in neutral and repeat, it should spin smoothly- if it doesn't, this could be the problem. [edit] typo. Mick, why can't I type the word `f r o' without it correcting to `for' ? Have you been playing again?? ![]() |

I noticed the noise one other time. It's was brief and then went away. I have the engine out. The cv's appear to be ok. Plenty of grease and no obvious broken things. I noticed a small amount of backlash between the inner cv centre and the drive shaft itself. Again nothing that would appear terminal. I. Noticed a small amount of backlash between the engine and the gearbox. Still nothing too serious. I drained the oil and again nothing bad. The output shafts at the diff spin freely. This leads me to believe that the differential gears are ok. The drivers side diff output shaft has recently started leaking oil. This would make sense if the inner cv shat itself. This would cause heat and stuff the seal..... I. Need to replace that seal because oil leaks bother me. I also need to redo the timing cover because like I said oil leaks bother me. Maybe it's the speedo drive gear? Surely not. The noise is quite loud. And can be heard clearly from outside the car. Maybe it's a wheel bearing ? |

Before I pulled the engine I check that, there seemed to be minimal slop.......idk ? |
