So I've seen a few stick on number plates around the traps in different states and am wondering if the owners of the cars have sought special dispensation to have them? Does anyone here have a number plate on their bonnet in lieu of the bumper mounted original?

What piqued my interest is an Elfin sports car on display at the National Automobile Museum in Launceston with a stick on Victoria black and white plate on it's bonnet. I don't have a pic but there's a few cars running around in different states with their plates seemingly matching the original, just in vinyl form. You can see couple on this page: http://www.jagtas.org.au/galleries/recent-events/national-auto-museum-50s-diner/

Any experience amongst the mini crowd?

Scotty

Haven't tried it in SA but here is what the transport SA site has to say...

"Displaying number plates

Only number plates issued by the Department for Transport, Energy and Infrastructure and made by the approved manufacturer comply with the requirements of the Motor Vehicles Act.

The display of non-approved plates incurs the risk of a traffic infringement notice and a fine.

Number plates must be visible from the front and rear of a motor vehicle and must not be obscured by a tow ball, load, plastic cover, dirt build-up or any part of the vehicle's bodywork."

Biggest hurdle to avoiding a fine would be getting past the first line where they state only their plate comply  so unless you can convince them to produce the stick ones for SA cars I guess you run the risk of a fine down here?

No can do in VIC! Must use issued plates and can't modify them either. (except for a gas sticker)

Some of the local hotrodders do that.....i think they get them printed themselves and risk it.
Definitely not official things.......we cant even get slimline permit plates!

NSW has such a giant range of plates (over 100) to take more of your money, maybe if enough people asked they could add them to the list?

We have a few cars at work that the customers had gotten their own plates made but the plates aren't QLD transport approved & therefore not legal.

Cheers Brad

I think username "brett" on here might be the person to ask about number plates in QLD. I think he has a non transport issued number plate which he was fined for, and i think he contested it and won?

I was at Sydney Motorsport Park a couple of weeks ago , and there was a guy selling custom number plates ( on the spot ) with whatever you wanted on them , and i couldn't tell the difference between them and standard issue plates , depending on how many letters you wanted on them , obviously more of a novelty thing , but from what i seen on his display wall , i don't know how you would tell the difference.
