Any advise on running in a freshly built engine?
What oil should I use?
How often should I flush it?
Any other tips, comments or suggestions?

Use a good quality oil with high zinc - it's good for running in. I did about 600km with the run in oil, then it's time for a good general service and oil change. Make sure you vary your speeds and RPM's constantly. Don't push too hard for extensive periods straight away

Penrite sells a specific running in oil if you like. Usually on the shelves of the usual suspect suppliers. http://www.penriteoil.com.au/engineoils ... oducts=397 A little bit higher in Zinc. 1610 ppm vs 1570 for HPR30. I'm not sure what kind of difference it makes, but zinc is important for the camshaft, and Crane Cams still push the product. |

Two different schools of thinking when it comes to running in an engine. Some say thrash it right off the bat and other vary speed, revs, bog it down in 4th up hills etc. I have done both methods, I must say the engine I thrashed right off the bat seems to be the stronger of the 2 and both the same specs and engine builder. Long term who knows what the outcome will be but if you google it plenty of folk reckon it is the way to go. Im sure the majority would err on the side of caution and do the proper run in procedure. I also use penrite run in oil for about 200 kms then dump it out. Also like to cut open the oil filter at this stage too and have a good look inside. |

Seems to be the best way , just thrash it straight up . All my speedway mini engines were done that way , run in on the first lap ... the engines last better as well . A lot of new car manufacturers run their engines in this way also ,thrash em on the dyno .....Did the same thing with the Honda Civic motors when I raced them .....very reliable |

Exactly as you have said AJ , if they are put together properly they should not fail . I can remember when my older brother used to race his speedway mini , ( 1408 fuel inj stroker ) he had an engine issue one Fri night , ( 2 day Easter meeting ) took it back home pulled the engine out , pulled it down , checked everything , re-ringed it , new bearings , put it back together and took it back to the speedway on the Sat night and run the whole meeting with no problems . |

GR ran in my Supercharged engine on the dyno while getting power readings:) It's going very well. Still strong after 2 years, no oil use I'm using Penrite oil but used Kmart oil for run in period and changed after about 200 km. |
