Hey guys,

Day two of my brilliant Tassie road trip, and we've covered almost 500km of gorgeous B and C roads. Sadly, a wheel bearing was not in the spares I brought, and the passenger rear has started to make a bit of noise.

Can anyone help?? I'm in the north of the island today (Thursday), heading in and out of B roads around Scottsdale and Mt Barrow, hoping to camp in Freycinet tonight. We'll be in Hobart for the weekend.

Cheers!!

If you make it to Hobart the Willson twins are extremely good, friendly and great service.

Legends!! I'm unable to get through to Wilson automotive this early in the am, but will try again next time I get service.

I made it to Freycinet and camped last night now we're heading out for a few hours walking.

The bearing is holding on, but it certainly has more movement today than yesterday. My plan is to drop it in with the Wilson twins Sat or Monday, as the Missus would prefer we don't spend half a day playing with HTB. Scoop, thank you so much for the offer mate! You're my plan B if the Wilsons can't sort me. As soon as I find out, I'll let everyone know!

I doubt you'll get much action from James and Daniel Willson over the weekend, they're both racing in the Historics at Baskerville I think. James is defending his title.

Spot on. They also told me they sold their last bearing an hour ago. :(

Ringing scoop now...

Quick question, '98 Rover - US it the same tapered roller bearing as the earlier models? Is the rear bearing the same as the front??

Early bearing fits.
Rears are smaller than fronts.

And I'm back! Thanks to everyone who posted some help, it was sincerely appreciated. :D

I ended up heading to Scoop's house, where he kindly dug in with me and helped to investigate the issue. Though the bearing didn't show any definite signs of an issue, the amount of grease on there (and 16 years old) was a bit suspect. We repacked it, tightened it all up properly, and whoila! the movement was gone. You're an absolute legend Scoop, and I hope I can repay the favour to a fellow mini'er soon.

Other than that my trip to Tasmania was amazing. I knew I would enjoy it, but I was without a doubt extremely surprised. The country side is beautiful, and so diverse you can be in a different climate/ecosystem every hour. The people were friendly everywhere we went, and it seemed that the entire island is one big Targa stage. No traffic to speak of, no police to worry about, and plenty to eat, see and do. Even Hobart and Launceston were pleasantly surprising, and I really don't have a bad word to say about the entire experience. So! Pictures...

Overall we covered 2,975km in 7 days, with no incidents other than the wheel bearing, a crowded (and now broken) shock boot, a tyre rotation and two ride height adjustments.

Anyone who is into cars has to do at least one lap of Tassie during their life. It is a fantastic place. It would be good to take the mini one time...

So who is organising an Ausmini road trip? Haha

We took Barney down there years ago (when the boat used to run from Sydney) and we had a ball. Did 2000+ km, it rained most days, but it's worth it. :)

I'm half of a team organising a Tassie Tour in September next year for the Vic Mini Club.. Sailing down, 4 days of driving officially, but people are more than welcome to stay longer.
Sailing on Saturday 27th Sept 2015.

Let me know if you're interested.

There's a Moke tour of Tassie, "Mokin' Downunder", to be held in Tassie in March next year. It will include a week of touring and couple of days of events around Hobart.
