yes it sure works. if you bring your mind back to Good Morning Australia with Bertie and Big Kev (extremely easy bringing back fond memories of the excitement) big kev was selling a mysterious powder for cleaning your silverware, called Big Kev's Mystery Powder. what you were supposed to do was: basin water aluminium foil wrap silverware and a couple of cups of the mystery powder. aluminium metal (more reactive than silver) reacts and becomes something shitty. that forces the shitty silver to turn back to silver metal. the caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) makes the solution not attack the metal and isnt very mysterious the same goes with that electrolysis process. the anode is there to provide a complete circuit (and will rust a little more) the battery is there to force the shitty iron to gain electrons and turn into iron metal and thats where the rusty part is connected it works, but you've got to be careful... converting rust (iron oxide) back into iron will release oxygen gas. a high current will rapidly convert rust, oxygen will be forced out quickly and you wont get a nice smooth uniform surface. you could also trap crap in the layers of rust you are converting. |
