I brought a SC12 Supercharger today  Any tips, advise on where to start? Should I strip it down and rebuild it, if so what do I need to do/replace? The only plan I have at this stage is to recondition the HIF44 and bling it up as well as chrome plate the mounting and polish up the SC12. What else?

I've hit a brick wall! I was hoping to pull the SC12 apart, replace the bearings and get the housing ceramic coated. But here's the big problem. The SC12 were made by Ogura Clutch for Toyota. Ogura doesn't spec their superchargers as rebuildable, neither does Toyota. Ogura expects you to buy a new supercharger. However the Toyota housings are different and have not been manufactured for many years. They are not available any more. The problem with overhauling the SC12 is the bearings are a very unique size and are not available anywhere aftermarket. Ogura has access to the bearings but cannot sell them without the permission of Toyota due to contractual agreements and Toyota don't stock them, won't stock them and simply aren't interested! I may just have to leave it as is internally and hope it has plenty of life left in it

you can get the bearings locally - you've just gotta pull them out and take them to a bearing shop, they're not that special... but I haven't bothered and been running it for a couple of years. You can pull it apart and bling up the housing without disturbing the bearings though. some pics here - viewtopic.php?f=5&t=66558 |

The plan is to chrome the SC to SU manifold and engine steady, the Cylinder head to SC manifold I'll get ceramic coated and the SC12 itself I'll get polished up as I don't / can't remove the bearing. The SC to SU manifold has a fair amount of rust sat in the inside bottom (it wasn't loose as seen in photo at the time I've just rubbed my grubby little finger over the rust and dislodged it) and the SC lobes has some scars, I assume from rust passing through. Is this scaring a problem? Will it effect it's operation?

Research is telling me the two lobes are made from extruded aluminium in the shape required. The outside surface is then grit blasted and cut to size, the lobes are then re-extruded through a slightly larger mould that applies a Teflon coat. Re-coating is not really an option because of the thickness of the Teflon varies between 0.3 to 0.5mm as the Teflon profile doesn't follow the aluminium profile. Therefore without the original outta mould you can't get the correct profile! The deepest part of the deepest scar is less than .2mm (as best as I can measure) and it's on the top of one the the lobes outta curves which I'm guessing would have the thickest coating!  My best guess at this stage would be to very carefully and very lightly sand the edging of the scars to make them smoother. If anyone has an opinion or advise please please please jump in now before I make a major fark up!! Cheers

I think you are on the right track Marty, I was reassembling a couple of turbos we had ceramic coated and the coating stopped the cartridge going back in the gas casing, emery tape it off and looked like new. bingo , went back nicely. |

Cheers Diesel, I would love to ceramic coat the housing but tolerances of the inner casing and the lobes are a bees dick so may suffer the same issues you have with the turbos! The forward bearing have had it and getting the top one out maybe tricking, I'm leaving it overnight to soak and see if I have more luck in the morrow! Once the bearings are out I'll polish the casing so it's nice and shiny
