Post subject:  Repair chrome bumpers
Hi all,

Dropped in to the bottlo yesterday to get some supplies, and while I was in there I heard my car alarm go off. Went outside to find a bunch of girls who had reversed their forester right into the front of the mini - they said they didn't see it :evil:

I thought I'd do a bit of research onto the bumper, as that's the only bit that's damaged that I'm worried about (the grill was dented but not enough to worry, and the spotlights weren't damaged). The bumper took the brunt as the towball bent it in. Has anybody had a bumper repaired before, and if not, does anybody know where to source a good 2nd hand one?

We're running thorough the girl's insurance, but I thought I'd have a look at the options. I don't want to have a crap job done at a panel repair place and be told 'that's the best we can do'.

Yeah, well I said I'd have a look at options and let her know. A clubby bumper looks to be ~$400 new, but she's sent some photos to a body shop to ask for prices if it can be fixed.

A chroming shop should be able to repair it for you. I have bought new bumpers in the past and they have started to rust within 3 months and would of been cheaper to get old ones dents removed and rechromed.

John's no doubt are better quality than the rubbish we can get locally here in Perth.

It's only the online shop part of his business that's not yet operating. I think he has New Old Stock bumpers.

Bad luck yobbo. i had my bumper repaired (insurance). The panel shop sent it off to the chroming shop and it came back looking mint. It only had a slight crease in it though, and some scratches.

Mine isn't too bad, the chrome hasn't broken, but I'm pretty confident it would if it were knocked back. I've emailed John Smidt for prices and availability - we'll see how it goes.

An update:

I've just received the new bumper from John Smidt at MiniKingdom, and I am very impressed with the quality, service and price. I would strongly recommend John as a supplier for mini parts.

I took the old bumper off, straightened up the front end a little (it needed some pretty serious panel work done anyway, so by hand was enough for now). I went to bolt on the bumper, but I noticed that the new bumper has bolt holes at the end, whereas my old one only had one, and it wasn't attached. My old one was only bolted on with the two in the middle.

There is a fair gap between the bumper and body holes at the end of the bumper - is there meant to be a spacer there? Or is it simply some bolts and washers, and my front end is even more warped than previously thought?

According to PUB1052 there's a spacer at either end.
